Kollective: 72% of Office Workers Say Video is More Effective than Voice Calls

BEND, Ore.--()--Real-time information sharing and video communication are key to driving employee engagement, with 72% of office workers in the UK and USA agreeing that video calls are a more effective channel for work communication than traditional voice calls. That’s according to a new Generation Now report from Kollective, a provider of Enterprise Video technology solutions.

The study, carried out with 2,000 US and UK people working in organisations with more than 500 employees, reports that 64% of office workers trust a message more if they can see the person speaking.

The research also reveals the majority of workers (60%) find visual content easier to digest and understand than written documents and communications materials. In fact, almost half (46%) of office workers say they don’t have either the time or inclination to read long emails or documents.

The findings are backed by leading financial services organisation Nationwide Building Society, which uses video to communicate with its employees across the society. Mark Gibson, digital consultant at Nationwide, comments: “In general, videos have a better level of engagement because there’s a greater opportunity for people to understand what it is that they’re trying to learn and the messages that are going out.”

The Kollective report, available for download, highlights the extent to which office workers are already communicating over video in their personal lives and their appetite for more visually-based, real-time information sharing in the workplace:

  • 65% of workers use YouTube to receive information in their personal lives – a figure that rises to 82% for 18-24 year olds
  • Two out of five workers use YouTube every day
  • A third of workers use live streaming social media services including Periscope and Facebook Live

Commenting on the findings, Dan Vetras, CEO of Kollective, said: “Today’s workers place a high value on seeing the people they are communicating with across their organisation. With increasingly dispersed and mobile teams, engineering that face time and real-time connection is critical, particularly with executive teams.

“Today’s employees are already accustomed to using the latest communication technologies in their personal lives and it’s time for organisations to integrate video and live streaming applications into employee communication strategies. Video communication not only means that information is transmitted in an accurate and a timely way, but ensures workers are communicated with openly to benefit employer-employee relations.”
