Nevada Virtual Academy to Celebrate Class of 2017

Online High School Students to Turn Their Tassels at In-Person Graduation Ceremonies

LAS VEGAS--()--Nevada Virtual Academy (NVVA), a statewide online public charter school, will celebrate the Class of 2017 with a pair of in-person graduation ceremonies on June 13 and 15 in Las Vegas and Reno, respectively.

Nearly 150 students will graduate from NVVA, which provides a blended learning program that combines online learning with face-to-face instruction. The school, which is open to students in kindergarten through 12th grade, offers a robust Advanced Learner Program, honors and Advanced Placement® courses.

Thirteen members of the Class of 2017 will also graduate with an Associate of Arts Degree from Western Nevada College – NVVA’s first class to do so – thanks to the school’s dual credit program, which offers qualified juniors and seniors the opportunity to earn college credit while enrolled at NVVA.

The school has three valedictorians – Sara Gong, Matthew Sheldon and Grace Machado – and Iulia Nita is the salutatorian. Carolyn Streva, a Las Vegas-area realtor who volunteers her time with many organizations that benefit high school students, will deliver remarks at the Las Vegas graduation, while Libier Martinez, a first-generation college student who is currently working towards obtaining her second Master’s Degree, will address the graduates at the Reno commencement ceremony. In addition, NVVA teachers and staff will be in attendance to recognize the students’ achievements.

“Our students are proof that education is not one-size-fits-all,” said Yolanda Hamilton, head of school at Nevada Virtual Academy. “We are proud to celebrate the accomplishments of each of our graduates and can’t wait to see what the future has in store for each of them.”

Members of the Class of 2017 report that they have been offered more than $203,000 in college scholarships. The students also report that they have been accepted to colleges and universities across the country, including University of Nevada-Las Vegas, University of Nevada-Reno, Brigham Young University-Idaho, Eastern Washington University, UCLA, University of Southern California, Nevada State College, Las Vegas Bible College, Utah State University, Lee University, Art Institute of Las Vegas, Academy of Art University, University of Hawaii, Boston University and Arizona State University, among others.
