Technavio analysts highlight the following three factors that are contributing to the growth of the global clinical mobility aids market:

Growing number of healthcare providers

Healthcare providers such as diagnostic and patient care centers, clinics, and hospitals are increasing in terms of numbers and facilities provided. The rising number of chronic diseases, medical emergencies, and short-term and long-term disabilities also play a major role in increasing the number of healthcare providers.

Amber Chourasia, a lead health and wellness research analyst at Technavio, says, “The most commonly used mobility aid products in hospitals are manually operated wheelchairs, which can be either self-propelled or attended-propelled, depending on the critical nature of the patient. These wheelchairs are mainly used in patient wards during the post-treatment phase.”

Enhanced services for post-treatment facilities

Advanced medical facilities include better diagnostic services, medical therapies, and machine-assisted surgeries, which are supported by various post-treatment services such as critical care, neonatal care, and intensive care. These services are carried out in specially designed units, which have advanced clinical mobility products.

In facilities, such as the intensive care unit and critical care unit, patients are kept under observation for recovery. During the recovery phase, the patients are unable to move from one place to another without support. Therefore, these patients need attendant-propelled or powered wheelchairs,” adds Amber.

Growing demand for home-based services

The primary cause for the rise in the cost of healthcare between 2000 and 2012 was the increasing prices of drugs, medical devices, and hospital services. This drove the population to look for more affordable healthcare solutions. Furthermore, modern healthcare facilities have expanded their boundaries from the hospital and clinical services to home-based services.

During these services, patients are advised to use mobility aid products such as canes, walkers, crutches, and wheelchairs based on their condition. Improvements in product design such as lightweight materials, foldability, and adjustability features in crutches and canes are also increasing the use of these products.
