LONDON--()--According to the latest market study released by Technavio, the global oscilloscope market is expected to grow at a CAGR of close to 6% during the forecast period.

This research report titled ‘Global Oscilloscope Market 2017-2021’ provides an in-depth analysis of the market in terms of revenue and emerging market trends. This report also includes an up to date analysis and forecasts for various market segments and all geographical regions.

Oscilloscopes have always been a preferred choice for test engineers to observe the change of an electrical signal over time. It is used as a diagnostic device to analyze the behavior of electrical signals. The demand for oscilloscopes is expected to increase year-on-year during the forecast period with the growth of Internet of Things,” says Navin Rajendra, a lead analyst at Technavio for semiconductor equipment research.

The market research analysis categorizes the global oscilloscope market into three major product segments. They are:

  • Digital oscilloscope
  • PC-based oscilloscope
  • Analog oscilloscopes

Digital oscilloscope

Digital oscilloscopes have the facility to store disrupted or unexpected electric signals so that this information can be used for future reference. This feature helps in capturing and logging of unexpected or unwanted incidents even in the absence of technicians. The automated incident capturing and storing facility of digital oscilloscopes enables technicians and engineers to gain a better understanding of the erroneous characteristics of the components and signals being monitored.

“The demand for higher bandwidth applications due to the introduction of digital technologies in consumer electronic devices is driving the demand for digital oscilloscopes supporting higher bandwidth applications,” says Navin.

PC-based oscilloscope

The global PC-based oscilloscope market is expected to grow at a CAGR of more than 6% during the forecast period. The demand for this oscilloscope is increasing because it is cost-effective compared to digital oscilloscopes. Secondly, it offers mobility to test and measurement engineers, as they can convert its computing devices into an oscilloscope by connecting an external plug-in PC-card-based measurement product VXI or PXI form-factor-based modules to PC or laptop. PC-based oscilloscopes can support higher bandwidth applications and increased sample rates.

Analog oscilloscopes

Despite offering several advantages, digital oscilloscopes face limitations in terms of the display screen refresh rate. The distortion in the tested signals is not captured if the signal frequency is higher than the screen's refreshing rate. This is one of the prime drawbacks of this product. In contrast, analog oscilloscopes can indicate distortion irrespective of the frequency. In such cases, an analog oscilloscope is better because it helps the user get an idea of the trigger rate by observing the steadiness of the cathode ray tube (CRT) traced with the naked eye. The analog oscilloscopes mainly cater to low bandwidth applications, particularly in educational institutes.

The top vendors highlighted by Technavio’s hardware and semiconductor market research analysts in this report are:

  • Fortive
  • Keysight Technologies
  • Teledyne LeCroy
  • ROHDE&SCHWARZ
