Required by 29 CFR 1910.1200, the labels enable U.S.-based chemical companies to align with the United Nations' Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals.

According to OSHA, the revised standard will “reduce trade barriers and result in...productivity improvements for American businesses that regularly handle, store and use hazardous chemicals, as well as cost savings...when revising [relevant] safety data sheets and labels.”
