LONDON--()--Technavio analysts forecast the global lyocell fiber market to grow at a CAGR of close to 8% during the forecast period, according to their latest report.

The research study covers the present scenario and growth prospects of the global lyocell fiber market for 2016-2020. The report also lists apparel, home textiles, medical and hygiene, and other applications as the four major end-user segments for lyocell fibre.

According to Swapnil Tejveer Sharma, a lead analyst at Technavio for textile, fiber, and composites research, “The emergence of lyocell as an ideal material for manufacturing non-woven fabrics, increased R&D activities, and the acceptance of lyocell fibers in newer and niche application areas are key factors that will drive growth during the forecast period.

Technavio chemicals and materials analysts highlight the following three factors that are contributing to the growth of the global lyocell fiber market:

  • Increasing demand for lyocell fibers for apparel manufacturing
  • Growing prominence of biodegradable textiles
  • Growing demand for lyocell fiber-based home textiles

Increasing demand for lyocell fibers for apparel manufacturing

Lyocell fibers are preferred over other fibers such as rayon and cotton owing to their high absorption efficiency and tenacity. These fibers have properties that are similar to other cellulose derived fibers such as cotton, viscose rayon, linen, and ramie. They can exhibit a wide range of characteristics ranging from being silky soft to rough and strong.

Lyocell fibers can be easily dyed to any color. The fabrics made of lyocell fibers are wrinkle resistant and drape well, and can mimic varied textures such as silk, denim, leather, and suede. Further, these fibers can be used in combination with other fibers such as cotton, rayon, nylon, linen, silk, and wool. They can either be hand washed or machine washed.

The lyocell stable fibers are used for manufacturing denim, shirts, suits, chinos, towel, underwear, and casual wear. They are also used for manufacturing fabrics that are soft and silky. The fabrics made of these fibers are comfortable to wear as these fibers are obtained from natural sources and offer a smooth surface finish. “The apparel made of lyocell can shield the body against extreme humidity by absorbing the moisture accumulated on the body surface, thereby maintaining the body temperature and water balance,” says Swapnil.

Growing prominence of biodegradable textiles

The demand for eco-friendly and biodegradable fabrics is increasing. The non-woven fabrics, which are mostly dependent on petroleum-based raw materials and whose waste management is posing a threat to the environment are being replaced with biodegradable fabrics made of natural fibers. Lyocell fabrics can be disposed easily in landfills and can also be incinerated. These fibers are completely broken down within a week into end products such as water and carbon dioxide due to anaerobic digestion by microorganisms.

Further, unlike synthetic fibers, the manufacturing of lyocell fibers involves non-toxic solvents such as amine oxide. Moreover, the manufacturing process enables the recycling of amine oxide solvent with almost 80%-90% efficiency, and the recycled solvent can be reused in the further production of lyocell fibers. Therefore, the process is eco-friendly and cost effective.

Growing demand for lyocell fiber-based home textiles

The market for lyocell fibers in the home textiles segment is growing significantly. The fibrillation property of lyocell fiber, which generates nanofibers around the main fiber filament, is unique compared to other synthetic fibers. These nanofibers aid in high moisture absorption, which is not possible with other fibers such as cotton or rayon. Lyocell fibers can absorb the moisture quickly and can also release it out into the environment, thus making these fibers best suited for bedding fabrics.

The moisture content in the bed decides the extent to which the bed is electrostatically charged. The lyocell fibers not only absorb excess moisture from the bed, they also lessen the static change and avoid uneasy shocks that are usually experienced during cold conditions.
