Sterilized Packaging – Market Drivers and Forecast from Technavio

LONDON--()--Technavio analysts forecast the global sterilized packaging market to grow at a CAGR of more than 6% during the forecast period, according to their latest report.

The research study covers the present scenario and growth prospects of the global sterilized packaging market for 2016-2020. The report has taken into consideration the revenue generated by the vendors for packaging of pharmaceutical products.

Sterilized packaging by plastic materials accounted for 63.09% in 2015. The plastics mainly used for sterilized packaging are polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polypropylene (PP), and high impact polystyrene (HIPS). Polyvinyl chloride accounted for 40% of the total plastic materials used for sterilized packaging in 2015, and PET accounted for 36%.

Technavio transportation and logistics analysts highlight the following three factors that are contributing to the growth of the global sterilized packaging market:

  • Growing demand from biopharmaceuticals market
  • Increased use of blow-fill-seal packaging technology
  • Rising global demand for pre-fillable syringes

Growing demand from biopharmaceuticals market

Biologics manufacturers are focusing on new methods of packaging to protect the drugs from contaminants, increase patient compliance, and adhere to the pharmaceutical packaging regulations. In biopharmaceuticals, the primary types of packaging include parenteral vials and pre-fillable syringes. These kinds of packaging, specifically used for biopharmaceuticals, are required to be sterilized and meet the regulations of the pharmaceutical packaging industry. Biopharmaceuticals have specific needs when packaged in containers as the drugs are sensitive to interaction with syringe and vial components.

Sharan Raj, a lead packaging analyst at Technavio, says, “Biopharmaceutical packaging manufacturers have adopted ready-to-sterilize and ready-to-use closure processes for the containers. During this process, the closures are depryogenated and sterilized, this eliminates the risk of microbiological contamination of the drug products.”

Increased use of blow-fill-seal packaging technology

The growth of the pharmaceutical industry across the world can be attributed to the advanced innovation and development of new drugs, which include both oral, liquid formulations, and intravenous drugs. Packaging for these types of drugs are frequently updated and refined to keep the drugs from interacting with contaminants. Manufacturers are using the blow-fill-seal method of packaging drugs, specifically in plastic containers, to keep the contents sterile. Drugs packaged through this process eliminates the risk of drugs being contaminated with organisms such as E. coli, Salmonella, and Staphylococcus, which can cause serious complications that include drug potency, protein aggravation, and infections.

The blow-fill-seal method is used only for plastic packaging and is not used in glass and paper packaging as glass bottles can break during the transit and paper and cardboard can harbor molds and bacteria. Hence, the blow-fill-seal technology is adopted for sterilized packaging of drugs,” adds Sharan.

Rising global demand for pre-fillable syringes

The pre-filled syringe market was valued at USD 5.32 billion in 2015 and is expected to post a CAGR of 12.01% during the forecast period. The main reason for the growth of the pre-filled syringes market is because they eliminate the need of taking the drugs from the vials. Inserting a syringe into a drug vial to draw out a dose can result in dosing errors as well contamination, whereas pre-filled syringes have the right amount of dosage in them. Use of pre-filled syringes has reduced dosage errors by almost 35%. Plastics are replacing glass and metal in pre-filled syringes as they are compared to be safer and are also compatible with most sterilization processes.

Innovations in pre-filled syringes will also fuel the growth for the sterilized packaging market. Safety issues regarding needle stick injuries are a primary concern among many medical practioners; it is harmful and interaction with needle sticks can cause contaminations. To eliminate harmful injuries, manufacturers are designing plastic needle shields and automatic needle retraction systems such that the needle is retracted into the syringe barrel immediately after its use. Therefore, the growth in the pre-filled syringe market will fuel the growth of the sterilized packaging market.
