For this year’s report, SANs surveyed more than 290 security professionals and found that external visibility, including tools that help provide insights to web-based vulnerabilities, malicious URLs, and attachments are on top of mind. However, the survey findings also revealed a significant and impactful security management and incident response gap.
- Less than 36% of respondents indicated that they can identify external threats that can be used to launch cyberattacks,
- More than 70% have not found means to reduce their attack surface,
- Only about 20% of respondents regularly found malicious websites hosting phishing web pages, and malicious websites hosting malware/EKs.
Given that more than 80% of data breaches are due to external threat actors*, it is imperative that organizations complement their portfolio of internal control monitoring tools with digital threat management capabilities to reveal security exposures across web, social and mobile platforms which exist outside a company’s firewall.
