Lightfleet Announces Breakthrough in Multicast Performance

New fabric cuts multicast latency by up to 95% while reducing skew to near zero

CAMAS, Wash.--()--Lightfleet Corporation (www.lightfleet.com) announces that the Tolly Group has published a new performance evaluation comparing the multicast performance of the Lightfleet Data Distribution System (DDS) and an Arista 7150S-52 switch with Solarflare SFN7122F host bus adapters. The report shows that end-to-end transfers across the Lightfleet fabric had up to 95% less latency compared to the Arista/Solarflare solution, with effectively zero latency skew at all receiving stations.

The tests involved transmitting packets from one source to 22 recipients over 10Gb networks, using the industry standard sockperf benchmarking utility. A description of the measurement methodology is included in the Tolly report referenced below. Compared to the Arista/Solarflare network, the Lightfleet interconnect demonstrated:

  • End-to-end average multicast latency that is significantly lower for all packet sizes tested
  • Near zero multicast latency skew at all receiving stations
  • Superior and consistent multicast performance with near zero jitter at all receiving stations

“Most HPC and Big Data system managers are unaware that it is possible to have skew-free multicast transfers,” said Kevin Tolly, Founder of the Tolly Group. “This capability may serve as an enabling technology for new applications.”

“The network switches on the market today generally implement multicast operations as a sequence of unicast transfers, contributing to increased latency and causing an unavoidable skew between times when packets are received by client systems,” said Jay Brandon, Lightfleet VP of Sales. “With the inherent, skew-free multicast capability of the Lightfleet DDS, an application can now be assured that its information is received simultaneously by a multitude of receiving applications.”
