ORLANDO, Fla.--()--AABB 2016 – A new series of high-performance refrigerators and freezers has been developed to support sustainability objectives by lowering energy usage and reducing noise output levels across blood banking, pharmacy, clinical and scientific applications, while ensuring optimal sample protection.

The new Thermo Scientific TSX Series refrigerators and freezers complement the existing range of -80°C ultra-low temperature (ULT) freezers in addressing the needs of laboratory and clinical facilities for reliable and consistent storage environments.

“Sample storage demands of laboratory and clinical settings vary considerably depending on the specific applications,” said Chris Champlin, vice president and general manager, Controlled Temperature Technologies at Thermo Fisher Scientific. “That’s why our new extended line of refrigerators and freezers feature application-specific models to cater to the needs of blood banking, pharmacy, medical and scientific facilities. In continuation of the environmentally-friendly approach already taken with our ULT freezers, the new refrigerators and freezers use natural refrigerants for improved laboratory sustainability.”

The new refrigerator and freezer models in the TSX Series are ideal for use in a wide range of laboratory and clinical settings:

  • Blood bank refrigerators comply with American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) regulations specifying a 4°C setpoint for the storage of whole blood and blood components
  • Pharmacy refrigerators are equipped with adjustable rolling wire baskets and triple-pane glass doors for the easy identification and access of vaccines, pharmaceuticals, chemotherapeutics and other material requiring 2 to 8°C storage
  • Laboratory freezers are ideal for storing reagents, pharmaceuticals, biological and other commonly used laboratory materials such as primers, siRNA molecules and FBS
  • Manual defrost -20°C freezers are designed for medical and scientific applications in which even the slightest instance of coil warming during auto defrost are intolerable
  • Automatic defrost -30°C freezers meet the strict requirements established by the AABB for the storage of plasma

Building on the TSX Series of ultra-low freezers, the new high-performance refrigerators and freezers feature the same unique variable speed compressor technology, V-Drive, designed to facilitate improved performance and provide significant energy savings. Combined with superior insulation and powered by V-Drive, the TSX Series is up to 10 times quieter than previous generation models, with sound levels approximating those of a household refrigerator. Reducing noise is especially important in the clinical setting since quieter refrigerators and freezers can be located closer to the point-of-care for more convenience. In addition, the new refrigerators and freezers use natural refrigerants, in accordance with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Significant New Alternative Policy (SNAP) for improved laboratory sustainability.
