JDRF Coastal Carolina Branch to Hold Annual One Walk™ to Raise Funds for Type 1 Diabetes Research

UNCW Campus to Host Dog-Friendly Community Walk on November 13

WILMINGTON, N.C.--()--To raise awareness of the disease and funds for research, local businesses, families and advocates will join children and adults living with Type 1 diabetes (T1D) for the JDRF One Walk™, hosted by the Coastal Carolina Branch on Sunday, November 13, 2016, at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington (UNCW) campus.

JDRF One Walk is one of more than 200 community walks nationwide focused on a single goal: creating a world without T1D. Through this year’s Walk, the JDRF Coastal Carolina Branch aims to raise more than $260,650 to help fund T1D researchers.

“Those who volunteer, support and work alongside JDRF show unmatched encouragement for those living with this serious disease,” said Greg Darrow, chair of the JDRF Coastal Carolina Branch board of directors, and father of Kortney Darrow, 32, who has T1D. “One Walk is a great opportunity to help the 1.25 million people living with Type 1 diabetes and make a real difference for those directly impacted in our community.”

To join JDRF for an afternoon of walking, music, food and fun for an important cause, walkers can register online now, or registration will be open the day of the Walk beginning at 12:30 p.m. in outside tents located behind the Fisher University Union. The official Walk will start at 2 p.m. near the amphitheater behind the University Union. There will be a t-shirt contest for corporate, family and school team divisions, with prizes awarded for first, second and third place. Walkers are welcome to bring leashed dogs.

“We are grateful to live in a community that values helping others,” said Erin Mabry, director of the Coastal Carolina Branch. “Type 1 diabetes has had an impact on countless of lives – in North Carolina alone, more than 860,400 people live with the disease. We encourage members of our community and local businesses to join us for this’s years One Walk support to those that battle Type 1 diabetes every day.”

Since 1992, One Walk has raised more than $1 billion for T1D research nationwide. For more information about One Walk, visit www.coastalcarolina.jdrf.org.

About Type 1 Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease that impacts millions of people around the world. The disease occurs when the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the beta cells in the pancreas that produce insulin, a hormone essential to turning food into energy. Without insulin, glucose from food stays in the blood, where it can cause serious damage to all of the body’s organ systems. It requires constant carbohydrate counting, blood-glucose testing, and lifelong dependence on injected insulin. With T1D there are no days off, and there is no cure.

The Coastal Carolina Branch of JDRF

The Coastal Carolina Branch of JDRF serves nine counties in Southeastern North Carolina. Our goal is to find a cure for Type 1 diabetes through raising funds for research. Throughout the year, we host a number of events including a fall walk, a spring gala and an educational symposium. Our Branch Outreach promotes awareness and supports families affected by Type 1 diabetes. More than 80 percent of money raised funds diabetes research and research-related education and outreach. Together, we will turn Type 1 into type none. For more information, please visit www.coastalcarolina.jdrf.org.
