After 40 Years of Leadership, Founder Dr. Dustin Heuston Steps Down as Waterford Institute CEO and Board Chair

President, Dr. Benjamin Heuston Named CEO; Zions Bank CEO A. Scott Anderson Joins as Board Chair

SALT LAKE CITY--()--Waterford Institute today announced the stepping down of Dr. Dustin Heuston as Chief Executive Officer and board chair. He will continue serving as founder and chair emeritus. Dr. Benjamin Heuston, who has been serving as Waterford’s president since 2003, will assume the role of president and CEO, effective immediately. Waterford also announced that A. Scott Anderson, president and CEO of Zions Bank, will serve as Waterford’s board chair, effective immediately.

Dustin Heuston, a pioneering educator, founded the Waterford Institute in 1976 with the mission to provide equity and access for every child to a quality education, through the power of technology. It was a bold vision when “technology” as we know it now was still in its infant stages.

“At a time when computers were green and black and made no noise, Dusty looked at that and said, ‘that can be revolutionary for children. Not an incremental improvement, that can change everything,’” Benjamin Heuston recalled. “Already, we have helped millions of children learn to read, and we still feel like we are just getting warmed up to achieve Dusty’s vision.”

Evidence of Heuston’s legacy includes a continuing body of research and publications on teaching literacy; a lasting impact on the direction and adoption of hardware and curriculum best practices across the industry; celebrated lifetime achievement awards; and the Waterford School, which he and Nancy Heuston established as an ideal model for children and has grown into a highly acclaimed and independently ran PreK-12 establishment.

“It’s a privilege to be asked to serve one of the world’s best research-supported programs for helping children master reading skills and instilling in them a lifelong love of learning,” A. Scott Anderson, CEO of Zions Bank, said regarding his newly appointed role as board chair. “I look forward to helping facilitate the expansion of Waterford’s programs to serve more children.”

These announcements follow last month’s appointment of Andy Myers as Chief Operating Officer, further filling out Waterford’s team of education industry veterans.
