MINNEAPOLIS--()--International and national designers came together in Minneapolis on Thursday, September 22, to honor the life of legendary recording artist, Prince. Select designers spent weeks carefully crafting exclusive looks inspired by Prince that were showcased on the runway for hundreds at the sold-out event: FASHIONOPOLIS; hosted by The Twin Cities premiere lifestyle publication, Mpls.St.Paul Magazine.

The event was co-hosted by the magazine's Editorial Director and Vice President of Content, Jayne Haugen Olson, a diehard Prince fan, and Senior Editor of Shopping & Style Allison Kaplan. The runway was produced by style expert Grant Whittaker.

“Prince's impact extended far beyond music. He was a true original when it came to all forms of self expression, and an inspiration to the fashion industry worldwide," says Kaplan. "We wanted to honor his memory by looking forward—these designers took their cues from some of Prince's most iconic fashion moments, and used that as a catalyst to create new and modern designs. We think Prince would have loved it."

The looks ranged from '80s inspired to ethereal to modern and minimalist. Participating designers include Toronto-based couture bridal designer Ines Di Santo; Boy Meets Girl® founder and social media superstar Stacy Igel, and two women from the Netherlands who moved to Minnesota in the 1990s with one goal: to design for Prince. They succeeded, and were thrilled to have FASHIONOPOLIS be the final statement to that chapter. A number of Minnesota-based designers are also included in the tribute including Project Runway alum, Christopher Straub.

Following FASHIONOPOLIS, the prince-inspired designs will be on display at the Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia), Sept. 27- Oct. 16. Mpls.St.Paul Magazine will host Tastemakers: The Intersection of Music + Fashion at Mia on Thursday, Sept. 29, featuring a panel discussion on Prince's design legacy including a Mia curator of contemporary design and a stylist and fashion photographer who worked for Prince.
