AICPA Congratulates House on Passing Mobile Workforce Bill

WASHINGTON--()--The following is a statement by Barry C. Melancon, CPA, CGMA, president and CEO of the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA), in reaction to passage by the U.S. House of Representatives of H.R. 2315, the Mobile Workforce State Income Tax Simplification Act of 2015, on September 21 on a voice vote.

“The AICPA strongly supports H.R. 2315 and congratulates the House on passing the mobile workforce bill. It is a vital step toward providing relief to taxpayers and their employers from the current maze of inconsistent and confusing state income tax and withholding rules that apply to employees who travel across state lines to temporarily work in another state. The bill strikes a reasonable balance that ensures states can collect the taxes due to them.

“We appreciate the effective championship of the bill by Representatives Mike Bishop (R-Mich.) and Hank Johnson (D-Ga.) and their commitment to the bill’s passage in the House. And we are grateful to House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) for shepherding the bill through his committee and to the House for consideration.

“We hope this action in the House helps the Senate bill’s sponsors, Senators John Thune (R-S.D.) and Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), move this legislation in the Senate. We believe House passage sends a strong message to the Senate that this legislation needs to pass before year’s end.”
