IDC Releases Study Examining Enterprise File Sync and Share Performance of Leading Vendors

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.--()--International Data Corporation (IDC) has published the results of an enterprise file sync and share (EFSS) evaluation, where the top seven vendors were tested to measure and compare sync performance. Sync is challenging to evaluate, but very important because when dealing with large volumes of files, these performance differences translate to increased networking costs and lower end user productivity.

The seven vendors evaluated were Box, Citrix, Dropbox, Egnyte, Google, Intralinks, and Microsoft. Each EFSS service was subjected to a series of tests that compared performance and reliability across three file sizes: small (less than 500K), medium (20 MB) and large (greater than 4GB) to emulate different use cases. One of the top reasons for adopting EFSS is the need for collaboration across enterprise boundaries, and vendors were evaluated accordingly to determine sync performance with users collaborating across multiple domains.

"Our results show that sync performance is dramatically different across EFSS services because of differences in architectures and the choices vendors make in implementing sync capabilities," said Maureen Fleming, program vice president for business process management and middleware at IDC. "An organization may choose to skip testing or undervalue sync compared with more visible EFSS capabilities. However, adopting a service with low performing sync can result in buyer remorse, with low adoption rates and unnecessarily higher networking costs."

Among the seven vendors, Dropbox and Egnyte ranked the highest in aggregate test results. All of the vendors passed their reliability tests.

The IDC report, EFSS Evaluation: Competitive Review of Sync Performance (IDC #US41709616), compares the results of a series of sync tests conducted by IDC across leading EFSS services to identify performance differences across different file sizes.
