$45 Million of Lasers Later, Glowforge Discounts Are About to Disappear

SEATTLE--()--Glowforge, the Seattle-based desktop laser company, has begun delivering beta units in preparation for shipments this December. Customers have continued to place pre-orders, and Glowforge has just announced $45 million in total sales. This is only ten months after Glowforge had the biggest 30-day crowdfunding campaign in history - a record it still holds. The company also announced that September will be the last month customers can pre-order a Glowforge at the steeply discounted price of $2,395.

Glowforge is a 3D laser printer that creates beautiful and useful products, from leather wallets to hardwood jewelry boxes, with a press of its single button. Designs can come from a drawing, a PDF or photo, or the Glowforge digital catalog of premium project designs.

“Our pre-order discount is just about over, and we don’t want anybody to miss out on a chance to get a Glowforge printer at this price before the discount expires next month,” said Glowforge CEO Dan Shapiro. “After watching hundreds of people print everything from handbags to furniture, we’re just about ready for production. We're now doing long-term reliability testing and building beta units on our US factory line, and our beta customers are using them every day. I’m constantly amazed at the projects they share with us.”

“I’ve never used a laser before, but with our Glowforge it’s quite simple,” said Mary Ellen Russell, founder and principal of landscape architecture firm Russell Lambert. “We’ve already put it to use making everything from architectural models, to wine labels, to our new door sign. We planned to use it primarily for business prototypes and architectural visualization, but now that I’ve played with it, I find myself excited about printing toys and other family projects with it as well. Being able to turn a design from a sketch to a beautiful product in minutes has got me thinking of all kinds of things that I didn’t imagine I could make before.”

“After 16 years of using lasers costing $15,000 and up, I was greatly impressed,” reported Glowforge customer Stephanie McGathy. “The software interface is simple and straightforward. The cameras are equally impressive, making it easy to preview my print. The transition from hand-drawn design to final print was seamless. My old lasers suggest materials to use but they don't always work - with the Proofgrade(tm) materials Glowforge provides, it only took one click and I was creating. My experience with Glowforge was no less than amazing.”

Pre-order pricing is only available through September at Glowforge.com. After September, prices will range from $3,000 - $6,000. Glowforge has 36 employees, and recently announced a $22 million Series B funding from Foundry Group and True Ventures.
