Susana Marcos Keynotes The Optical Society’s Centennial “Light the Future” Program at Latin American Optics and Photonics

MEDELLÍN, Colombia--()--The Optical Society (OSA), the leading global professional association in optics and photonics, today will host the latest in its Light the Future program with speaker Susana Marcos, director of the Visual and Biophotonics Laboratory, Institute of Optics, CSIC, Madrid, Spain. The program will take place at the Latin America Optics and Photonics (LAOP), a premier international conference in Latin America promoting industry development in optics and photonics within Latin America, on Wednesday, 24 August 2016, 18:15 – 19:00 COT in Medellín, Colombia.

Marcos’ presentation “An Eye Into the Future” will explore the advances in light-based optical technologies that are leading the way for better diagnosis and treatment of eye ailments such as Myopia and Presbyopia.

“Susana is an excellent choice to keynote this Centennial program,” said Elizabeth Rogan, CEO of The Optical Society (OSA). “She’s a highly respected expert within this complex field and is well known through her research, publishing and patents.”

Marcos’ work has earned her multiple awards, including the prestigious International Commission for Optics ICO Prize, European Young Investigator Award, the OSA’s Adolph Lomb Medal, among many others. Marcos’ is a fellow of the OSA, has served on the OSA Board as a Director at Large, has served as the Director of Optical Imaging Program at MIT M+Vision Consortium, and was Topical Editor in Vision Research for Biomedical Optics Express. Outside of her research, Marcos’ has co-founded two companies, 2EyesVision, Madrid, Spain, and Plenoptika, Boston, Massachusetts, USA.

The Light the Future speaker series includes a tour of eight international cities as part of OSA’s Centennial program, featuring visionaries, futurists and Nobel Prize winners discussing how science affects our lives every day.

The series kicked off in February of this year in Washington, D.C. with Ira Flatow, host of Science Friday, and has featured Mary Lou Jepsen at OFC 2016; Ray Kurzweil and fomer U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu at CLEO 2016; Joseph Izatt and Bernard Kress at the Imaging Congress in Germany.
