Dialog Semiconductor Powers Xiaomi's Latest Mi Band 2 (news with additional features)

Dialog Bluetooth low energy success and leadership in wearables continues at Xiaomi with their recently launched activity tracking band; one of the most anticipated wearable devices of 2016

LONDON--()--Dialog Semiconductor plc (FWB:DLG), a provider of highly integrated power management, AC/DC power conversion, solid state lighting (SSL) and Bluetooth(R) low energy technology, today announced that Xiaomi, one of China's fastest growing electronics companies, has selected the company's Bluetooth DA14681 Wearable-on-Chip(TM) to power its recently launched Mi Band 2 activity tracking wrist band.

The Mi Band 2, developed in collaboration with Xiaomi's strategic partner Huami, adds a 0.42-inch organic LED (OLED) screen and debuts smartwatch- style notifications for text and email. That, combined with a single button below the display, enables scrolling options including displaying time, steps and heart rate information. Compared to the hugely popular previous generation, the Mi Band 2 includes optical heart rate monitoring and improved fitness tracking capability. Additionally, an updated pedometer algorithm coupled with an ultra-low power accelerometer provides accurate step tracking. Sophisticated sleep monitoring remains a key feature. A built-in vibration motor alerts the user providing a discrete warning to the wearer that they've been sitting too long. The Mi Band 2 is water and dust-resistant achieving IP67 certification.

"Xiaomi established themselves as a world leader in low cost fitness bands with the launch of the Mi Band in 2014 which was based on our SmartBond(TM) Bluetooth low energy technology," said Sean McGrath, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Connectivity, Automotive & Industrial Business Group. "With our latest high integrated SmartBond(TM) DA14681 Wearable-on-Chip(TM) at its core, providing connectivity, application processing, sensor fusion and advanced power management functionality, the Mi Band 2 is even better positioned to further grow share in the rapidly expanding wearable market," added McGrath.

Dialog's DA14681 enables the Xiaomi Mi Band 2 to deliver up to 20 days of battery power from its 70mAh battery maintaining its status as one of the most energy-efficient wearables available to consumers today. The small, ultra-low power integrated circuit includes the key functionality to create a fully hosted wearable computing product. It features an integrated ARM(R) Cortex(R) M0 processor with flexible processing power, flash memory for virtually unlimited execution space, dedicated circuitry for sensor control, analog and digital peripherals optimized for wearable products, and an advanced power management unit. The DA14681 eliminates several external chips from wearable product design, facilitating smaller form factors, lower system cost and lowest power consumption.
