Global dental prosthetics market by all ceramics
Ceramics are inorganic structures that consist of compounds of oxygen with one or more metallic or non-metallic elements. The elements are usually potassium, calcium, aluminum, sodium, phosphorous, zirconium, titanium, and silicon. Ceramic crowns and bridges are generally made of a dental ceramic called porcelain. A dental porcelain is made up of a combination of cement, gypsum, glass, and porcelain. This ceramic is a non-metal, crystalline, or amorphous solid. Prosthetics are fabricated to match the requirements of an individual. Most ceramic prosthetics such as crowns and bridges are handmade, while others are machine milled; both production methods have their advantages. “Ceramic is a good alternative to gold and other metals and is a long-lasting material that offers an attractive translucent finish to crowns and bridges, thus giving a realistic appearance,” adds Barath.
Global dental prosthetics market by PFM
Porcelain-fuse metal (PFM) is a glass-like material and is a hybrid of metal and porcelain. It is mostly used in crowns and bridges. PFM has good resistance to decay and the material is durable due to the presence of metal substructure. It prevents leakage because of its shape and fit. PFM is durable, has less susceptibility to fracture, is resistant to surface wear, and permits either metal or porcelain on the biting surface of crowns and bridges.
For instance, instead of pure 24 karat gold, different types of alloys of noble metals such as platinum, gold, and palladium are combined with gold in a 60:40 ratio as these have the necessary biophysical properties. PFM is used in many cases and has some advantages over other materials.
Some advantages of PFM are:
- It has good resistance toward occlusal stress and leakage
- It has excellent resistance to toxicity and shows rare sign of allergy to alloys or metal used
Global dental prosthetics market by metals
The metals used as dental materials are mostly base metal alloys that are non-noble. These generally have a silver appearance and high strength. Most of the metal materials used in dental applications are alloys or intermetallic compounds (mixture of nickel and chromium). These have a strong hold over the implant, and the restoration is excellent if they fit well. These materials are harder than natural enamel and thus may cause abrasion to the opposite natural tooth. The resistance of these materials to occlusal stress is excellent. Few individuals are prone to allergy, mostly due to the nickel content in the metal. However, occasionally infrequent reactions are seen. Metal crowns and bridges are made from metal or metal fused with porcelain. The method of fabrication for these crowns and bridges for dental restoration differs with the size of the patient's tooth. Metals is segmented into two types: titanium and zirconia. Titanium is the most commonly used material in dental prosthetics.
