Technavio Says the Development of Autopilot Landing System Will Boost the Global Military Aircraft Actuation Systems Market Through 2020

LONDON--()--Technavio’s latest report on the global military aircraft actuation systems market provides an analysis on the most important trends expected to impact the market outlook from 2016-2020. Technavio defines an emerging trend as a factor that has the potential to significantly impact the market and contribute to its growth or decline.

The top three emerging trends driving the global military aircraft actuation systems market according to Technavio aerospace and defense research analysts are:

  • Development of autopilot landing system
  • Emergence of Auto-GCAS
  • Shift toward electric actuators

Development of autopilot landing system

Implementation of autopilot landing system enables secure landing of aircraft, during turbulent weather conditions and blurry vision. The system finds its application in airports facing rough weather. “With the use of the computer in landing system, different parameters such as altitude, airspeed, heading, and distance can be adequately monitored and measured by the autopilot to ensure safe landing of the aircraft,” says Abhay Singh, a lead analyst at Technavio for aerospace components research.

In 2014, the European countries such as the UK, France, and Italy had 1,230 combat helicopters, as compared to the 1,218 helicopters in 2013. Similarly, India and China had 1,500 such helicopters, whereas the US had over 5,800 combat helicopters.

Such increase in demand for aircraft will result in investments in actuation systems by defense authorities, which would further fuel the demand for autopilot landing system, ensuring safe aircraft landing and reduced human errors.

Emergence of Auto-GCAS

In 2010, NASA, the US Air Force, and the aerospace technicians of Lockheed Martin developed the automatic ground collision avoidance system (Auto-GCAS). This system enhances the safety by monitoring the position of the aircraft and its distance from the ground in real time. Under non-recoverable situations, Auto-GCAS helps the pilot avoid a crash.

Although NASA and Boeing have considered integrating the system into commercial aircraft, fighter aircraft such as F-16, F-22, and F-35 are also being equipped with Auto-GCAS. In 2014, the new cockpit technology saved an F16 fighter jet and its pilot, in Syria. In 2015, Saab developed a similar automated GCAS for the JAS-39 Gripen fighter aircraft. Installation of this technology in commercial aircraft must be accelerated to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Therefore, the vendors and the AFRL would develop specialized actuation systems that would integrate the advanced system with the aircraft, thereby increasing the safety of the soldiers and cargo.

Shift toward electric actuators

The growing demand for aircraft performance optimization and reduction in operating costs and gas emissions have led to increased dispatch of reliable more electric aircraft (MEA). Rapid technological advances in electro-hydrostatic actuators, flight control systems, fault-tolerant architecture, power electronics, high-density electric motors, power generation, and conversion systems have led to the development of MEA. Specifically, MEA provides for the use of electric power for all non-propulsive systems. Traditionally, these systems were powered by a fusion of different secondary energy sources such as hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, and electricity.

Therefore, the shift toward MEA involves replacing the hydraulic and pneumatic actuators with electrical actuation systems and requires a significant increase in the electric power generation and distribution systems. The R&D in most recent programs, such as the Airbus A400M military transport aircraft, has enabled a radically transformed onboard energy chain mainly based on electrical systems.
