2016 Nursing & Community Social Innovations Lab Announce Winning Idea

National Nurse-Led Care Consortium partners with Philadelphia Social Innovations Journal & Social Innovations Institute & Lab ™ to support innovators in nursing and community health

PHILADELPHIA--()--The National Nurse-Led Care Consortium (NNCC), along with the Philadelphia Social Innovations Journal (PSIJ) & Lab (SIL) are pleased to announce the 2016 Nursing & Community Social Innovations Lab winning idea that focuses on nurse-led innovations to improve health care.

The Patient Information Networking Group (PING), led by pediatric nurse Sunny Hallowell of Villanova, Pa., is a mobile platform dedicated to bridging the transition gap from hospitals to homes for new mothers and infants in Philadelphia. PING was selected the winner after Hallowell pitched her idea to a panel of entrepreneurs and philanthropists at PSIJ’s 27th edition launch presented in partnership with the Health Promotion Council and sponsored by the Independence Blue Cross Foundation.

“The Social Innovations Lab™ was a timely and extraordinary experience as it gave my team and me the framework to evolve the idea into a feasible product and service,” said Hallowell. “Without the Social Innovations Lab™ framework we would not be a position to seek investors.”

Community nurses and participants came from all over the region and included representatives from schools of nursing at University of Pennsylvania, Villanova University, and Community College of Philadelphia, as well as from Project Home and Public Health Management Corporation. Their ideas included a podcast focused on the farm-to-table movement, a service to improve respite care for the homeless, and a virtual CPR training program among many others.

Participants went through the Social Innovations Institute & Lab’s ™ intensive sustainable innovation process, which transforms both emerging and established leaders and their companies into sharper, smarter, better versions of themselves. Through interactive workshops and curriculum modules, participants imagine, refine, and pursue their own enterprises and innovations to solve social problems. Participants learn from experts with real-life experience and research knowledge on how to create social sector market opportunities, design new business models, and attract both seed money and sustainable funding from philanthropic and government sources.

“Community nurses are essential to the transformation of the American health system that is currently underway. We have barely begun to harness nurses’ creativity and ability to develop new solutions to entrenched health problems. With the support of the Nursing and Community Social Innovations Lab facilitated by the Social Innovations Institute & Lab ™, nurses have an incredible potential to lead innovations in health care delivery in our country and around the world,” said Tine Hansen-Turton, Executive Director of NNCC and co-founder of the Philadelphia Social Innovations Journal and Lab.

“Both the Journal and the Institute & Lab showcase the very best in social impact within the Philadelphia region,” said Nicholas Torres, co-founder of the Journal and Lab. “The Lab is very important to helping launch social enterprises not only because we help participants develop business skills, but also because the pitch events put them into direct contact with potential social investors. What happens after the lab is just as exciting when many of these ideas turn into viable social enterprises.”

The Nursing and Community Health Social Innovations Lab was hosted by the National Nurse-Led Care Consortium, the national voice for advancing nurse-led care nationally and internationally, and was supported by the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation.
