ORLANDO, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Caring for and treating patients diagnosed with obesity cannot be cookie-cutter. On the contrary, caring for obese patients requires a personalized and individualized approach to treatment based on a newly created algorithm designed by members of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) especially for obesity management.
Recognizing that obesity continues to carry a large burden of morbidity and mortality and contributes to expanding health care costs, the AACE Obesity Scientific Committee was charged with developing evidenced-based guidelines when treating patients with obesity.
“Our rationale for creating these guidelines was the fact that obesity medicine lacks comprehensive and evidenced-based guidelines that are translatable to real-world clinical care of patients with obesity,” said W. Timothy Garvey, MD, FACE, Chair of the AACE Obesity Scientific Committee. “The new guidelines help physicians and others by eliminating the guesswork as it pertains to obesity management, including dietary, behavioral, psychological and physical considerations to treatment.”
Dr. Garvey and other members of the Obesity Scientific Committee will present the new AACE Comprehensive Clinical Practice Guidelines for Medical Care of Patients with Obesity at an in-depth symposium on Friday, May 27, from 9:15 a.m. to noon.
