Emergency Physician Partners Names Chairman of Hospital Company to Board

Dan Moen, founder and chairman of LHP Hospital Group, becomes first to join board since founding

NASHVILLE, Tenn.--()--Nashville-based Emergency Physician Partners (EPP) announced today Dan Moen, one of the founders of LHP Hospital Group, Inc. and chairman of the LHP Board of Directors, has joined EPP’s Board of Directors, effective immediately. Moen, who has nearly 40 years of healthcare experience, marks the first addition to the company’s board since its founding last December.

“A veteran leader like Dan is a tremendous addition for any organization, but we are particularly excited to gain his demonstrated expertise in forming creative healthcare partnerships in a way that creates value for all parties involved,” said EPP Founder, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Christopher Kelly. “As our organization seeks to build meaningful partnerships with emergency physicians across the country, Dan’s strategic insight will allow us to build partnerships in a way that even better meets the changing needs of today’s physician practices. His belief in our business model, and subsequent agreement to join our board, is gratifying for our young organization.”

Moen joins Kelly on the board, as well as Don McLemore and Theresa Sexton, partners with Claritas Capital Equity Group, the Nashville-based investment firm which granted EPP access to more than $25 million at the physician partnership organization’s launch.

EPP collaborates with leading emergency medicine practices across the country to help physicians preserve their clinical independence, focus on providing quality patient care, and be positioned for success in an uncertain, ever-changing and highly-regulated healthcare environment.

“Chris and the leadership team at EPP have shown a deep understanding of the complex needs of leading emergency medicine practices in today’s changing healthcare environment,” said Moen, who, along with other executives, founded Texas-based LHP in 2008. “This sector of healthcare stands to benefit a great deal from increased consolidation, and the network EPP is building will allow for efficiencies such as better negotiated contracts and shared administrative best practices for partner organizations. EPP is bringing the right model, at the right time, to the right types of physician practices.”

Moen has been involved in more than half of the nation’s whole-hospital joint venture transactions between taxable and tax-exempt health systems over the past 20 years. Prior to joining LHP, he served as EVP of Development for Triad Hospitals, Inc., where he spearheaded the acquisition of new hospitals. Moen worked for Columbia Hospital Corporation (now HCA) from 1991 to 1998, in various executive positions, including president of the Florida Group. He started his healthcare career with Humana in 1977, working in positions of increasing responsibility for 14 years.

In addition to Kelly, EPP’s senior management team includes hospital financial management veteran Brady Sturgeon, chief financial officer, executive vice president and founder, who previously served as Vice President of Development for LHP. In addition, founder Brian White will serve as executive vice president and chief operating officer. White was most recently founder and managing partner of Competitive Solutions, a management consulting firm specializing in hospital-employed physician management and physician practice operations.

EPP is the first single-specialty organization dedicated to partnering exclusively with emergency medicine physician groups. Today, approximately 20,000 of the country’s 45,000 emergency physicians remain independent. Hospital and payer consolidation have increased significantly following the passage of the Affordable Care Act making the environment more difficult and uncertain for emergency medicine physicians.
