F4CP COLLABORATES WITH NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF WORKSITE HEALTH CENTERS: HOSTS ROUNDTABLE ON ROLE OF CHIROPRACTIC CARE IN EMPLOYER ON-SITE CLINICS

The Foundation for Chiropractic Progress (F4CP), the voice of the chiropractic profession, has provided a grant to the National Association of Worksite Health Centers (NAWHC) to explore the views and experiences of employer-sponsors of on-site clinics, beginning with a NAWHC-hosted roundtable discussion in Chicago, Illinois, which engaged numerous employers who currently sponsor these centers. This activity is intended to provide employers and clinic vendors with guidance when considering including chiropractic care in their facilities.

“This activity further extends the role of the NAWHC as a facilitator and as a central source of information for discussions that help employers explore and evaluate opportunities to enhance the delivery of care at on-site clinics,” says Larry Boress, executive director, NAWHC. “Working with the F4CP, we are pleased to assist the employer and clinic communities who are expanding their services to include chiropractic care in furthering their understanding of chiropractors, their training and education, and the potential value of integrating chiropractic care into their health care models.”

Discussions focused on an NAWHC survey of employer perceptions and experiences with chiropractors, as well as the current training, education and capabilities of chiropractors in addressing neuro-musculoskeletal conditions, and providing a drug-free, non-invasive approach for these conditions. The roundtable examined reports and research on chiropractic care in employer settings that were published in professional journals to document improvement clinical and financial value, return on investment (ROI), and employee productivity with reduced absenteeism.

The event included presentations by Sherry McAllister, DC, executive vice president, F4CP and William Updyke, DC, Cisco LifeConnections Health Center, San Jose, CA, who articulated the training and education of doctors of chiropractic (DCs) and shared information regarding opportunities for reducing the cost of care.

Dr. McAllister states, “Doctors of chiropractic – who receive a minimum of seven years of higher level education – are specifically trained in the management of neuro-musculoskeletal conditions.” She continues, “With low back pain cited as a leading cause of missed workdays and lost productivity, the conservative chiropractic approach is a safe and effective alternative in comparison to prescribing addictive and potentially fatal opioids. It is now validated in multiple studies that chiropractic care is effective for acute and chronic spinal pain and chronic headaches, with high patient satisfaction.”

Dr. Updyke pointed out that musculoskeletal conditions are a top driver for health care costs, adding, “DCs not only present opportunities for significant cost-savings, but also improved clinical outcomes and high patient satisfaction scores.”

Kenneth Aldridge, RN, BSN, MS-HSA, director of health services, Rosen Medical Center, Orlando, FL noted that there is a full-time DC on-staff at the 12,000 square foot facility where patients report ‘miracles’ and high satisfaction after accessing chiropractic care.

David Hines, director of employee benefits, Metro Nashville Public Schools, expressed interest in the logistics of bringing a DC onto his staff, and will likely be adding chiropractic services to the five on-site corporate health centers that he directs.

In April 2016, NAWHC conducted a limited survey to begin gauging the views, roles and use of chiropractors in employer clinics. Preliminary results point to favorable trends including high patient satisfaction, reduced costs, lower total number of visits for patients who consult with a DC, and a high interest in chiropractic services.
