WHY:

Washington, D.C. has the highest death rate from breast cancer in the U.S. Women in D.C. are diagnosed with breast cancer at a rate 20 percent higher than the national average and are dying from the disease at a rate 40 percent higher. Susan G. Komen wants to change these dire statistics by funding programs that ensure everyone has the access and resources to battle breast cancer regardless of their economic circumstances.

 

PEOPLE:

Braxton Family Value’s reality star Traci Braxton, who lost her grandmother to breast cancer, will entertain and participate in the race as captain of the Crowns and Cleats Team.

 
Elite runner and Olympic hopeful Sarah Brown of Northern Virginia, will lead a Race warm-up for participants before the start of the race. Brown, who was recently profiled in People Magazine, has witnessed her mother’s battle with breast cancer.

ABOUT:

Since its inception in 1990, funds raised from the Susan G. Komen Washington, D.C. Race for the Cure and other events have provided more than $36 million for over 300 community grants to support local programs in the National Capital Region. These grants are dedicated to reaching low-income, minority and uninsured women in areas where breast cancer rates are highest. Additionally, more than $44 million has been invested in over 152 grants to breast cancer researchers at institutions in the National Capital Region.
