Nearly $400 Million Saved by Californians Using California Rx Card Program

Discount Prescription Assistance Available to All California Residents

ORANGE, Calif.--()--Since it was launched in late 2007, the California Rx Card® prescription drug assistance program has saved California residents more than $397.5 million according to information released for the period ending December 31, 2015.

“The no-cost California Rx Card makes prescription medications more affordable for many uninsured and underinsured Californians,” said Edward J. Brown III, Vice President of the California Rx Card program. “It offers important savings to people without health insurance or prescription drug coverage. But it also offers savings to those with insurance, because the card discount can be substantial. Sometimes the California Rx Card price is lower than a person’s prescription drug co-pay amount. For residents to have saved nearly $400 million since the card was introduced less than 10 years ago is amazing.”

The California Rx Card discount-prescription card is available to any resident of the state, regardless of age or income. It offers savings on both brand name and generic medications, with discounts ranging from 30 to 75 percent. The card is accepted at all major chain pharmacies in California and at more than 56,000 national, regional, and independent pharmacies across the country.

“It’s easy to get a card by visiting our website, www.californiarxcard.com,” boasts Brown. “The card is pre-activated, so it can be used immediately. Our roster of pharmacies is outstanding, too. It includes many of the country’s largest chains, including CVS, Rite Aid, Walgreens, and Walmart, as well as regional pharmacies like those inside Albertsons, Pavilions, Raley’s, Ralphs, Safeway, and Vons supermarkets. The card also offers savings to Californians when they’re traveling outside the state.”

Individuals who do not qualify for publicly funded programs, such as Medicaid and Medicare, can particularly benefit from the program, as will people filling medications not covered by their insurance. The program even offers discounts for people receiving prescription medications through charity care providers under government 340B programs as well as providing discounts on certain prescriptions for pets.

Californians who lack Internet access to download a free card can visit their local CVS pharmacy and ask the pharmacy technician or pharmacist to process their prescription through the California Rx Card. Prescriptions filled through the program are confidential.
