The report segments the data center UPS market in the US by the position of UPS and can be divided into three broad segments:

  • Centralized UPS systems
  • Zone UPS systems
  • Rackmount UPS systems

Centralized UPS systems

The data center UPS market in the US by centralized UPS system is expected to reach USD 860 million by 2020, growing at a CAGR of over 2%.

Centralized UPS systems provide up to three MW power supply during outages. They are widely used in large data centers and can cost up to millions of dollars. These systems are capable of supplying adequate power to large facilities, including other power and cooling infrastructure.

Data center construction in the US will include mega data center facilities. Therefore, the adoption of centralized UPS systems will continue to increase, resulting in increased market revenue. However, the growth rate of the market will decline because of the decreased cost of UPS systems.

Zone UPS systems

The data center UPS market in the US by zone UPS systems is expected to reach USD 380 million by 2020, growing at a CAGR of over 3%.

Zone or floor-level UPS systems are installed in every data center floor or room. These systems are used to power medium-sized data centers with a power requirement of 50-200 kVA. The use of these systems will be sufficient for data centers that are divided by floors, where there is less need for wiring from centralized UPS systems. The growth rate of zone UPS systems depends on the construction and renovation of data center facilities that have immediate backup needs.

“With the inception of rackmount UPS systems, the adoption of zone UPS systems may decrease. However, in a situation wherein a rackmount UPS system is not capable of supplying enough power to a rack, zone UPS systems can be fitted to specific racks in a row,” says Rakesh Kumar Panda, a lead analyst at Technavio for data center research.

Rackmount UPS systems

The data center UPS market in the US by rackmount UPS systems is expected to reach USD 330 million by 2020, growing at a CAGR of over 11%.

The power density at the rack level is growing and will be around 25 kW by the end of the forecast period. Rackmount UPS systems are cheaper than centralized and zone UPS systems. However, for a data center with a high number of racks, the installation of rackmount UPS systems will cost more compared to that of zone and centralized UPS systems.

Rackmount UPS systems are mostly adopted in small to medium-sized data centers. These systems are also used in data centers that undergo extension with the addition of racks. Zone and centralized UPS systems may not be able to meet the backup power requirement of such data centers. “With enterprises identifying the benefits of rackmount UPS systems and vendors focusing on improving the scalability of these systems, the market will see considerable growth during the forecast period,” says Rakesh.

Technavio ICT analysts highlight the following six vendors as the top contributors to the data center UPS market in the US:

  • ABB
  • Eaton
  • Emerson Network Power
  • GE Industrial Solutions
  • Schneider Electric
  • Tripp Lite
