Saturna Capital Names New CIO, Creates Global Strategist Role

The company positions to boost global market research and analysis

BELLINGHAM, Wash.--()--Saturna Capital Corporation (“Saturna”), manager of the Amana, Saturna Sustainable, and Sextant mutual funds, has announced the promotion of Scott Klimo, CFA, to chief investment officer and the appointment of Nick Kaiser, CFA, as global strategist.

Chief Investment Officer

Stepping into the CIO position, Mr. Klimo, CFA, will oversee Saturna’s investment team and guide the firm’s investment process and research. He continues in his portfolio manager roles for several Saturna mutual funds.

“Serving for four years as Saturna’s director of research, Scott has been instrumental in expanding and deepening the firm’s investment research capabilities, and we are thrilled he has advanced to lead our investment team,” said Jane Carten, president and CEO of Saturna. “As a strong leader and seasoned global investor, he also brings a personal commitment to values-based investing that upholds Saturna’s investment philosophy and will further enhance our ability to deliver modern investment tools to investors and advisors around the world.”

Mr. Klimo, age 55, has over 25 years of global investment management experience. He joined Saturna in 2012 as director of research. He has deep expertise in domestic, international, and emerging equity markets, and keen analytical skills in building financial models for companies and industries. As director of research, Mr. Klimo guided Saturna’s analyst team as they further refined the firm’s proprietary socially responsible security grading methodology to create Saturna’s ESG (environmental, social, and governance) security rating system. That project culminated in the 2015 launch of the Saturna Sustainable Equity and Bond Funds that invest globally according to ESG principles.

Previously, Mr. Klimo served as a senior analyst, research director, and portfolio manager for investment firms in Thailand, Hong Kong, and the United States.

Global Strategist

In the newly created position of Global Strategist, Nick Kaiser, CFA, age 69, is responsible for developing Saturna’s view on global market trends and conditions, asset allocation, and investment strategies. Relinquishing day-to-day oversight of Saturna’s investment team to Mr. Klimo, Mr. Kaiser, continues as portfolio manager for several Saturna equity mutual funds and private accounts.

Ms. Carten explained that as global markets continue to integrate and pose new challenges for investors, Saturna sees the need to boost its global market and investment trend research and analysis, and asset allocation decision-making. The delegation of CIO responsibilities to Mr. Klimo will allow Mr. Kaiser to focus on these increasingly important areas for Saturna. Mr. Kaiser continues to serve as Saturna Capital’s chairman and president of its mutual fund trusts.

Mr. Kaiser founded Saturna in 1989 as a values-based investment management firm that adheres to the principles of socially responsible investing (SRI). For many years, he led Saturna in pioneering the development of Islamic equity strategies for US and international investors. The Amana Funds, designed for US investors and managed by Saturna according to Islamic guidelines, have won numerous awards from US and foreign rating agencies and have been recognized for adhering to the highest sustainability standards.
