ARLINGTON, Va.--()--Teachers can boost students’ knowledge of science as well as their creativity by assigning a travel blog about the digestive system, a packing list for the planets, or an interview with an atom. A new NSTA Press book, Creative Writing in Science, shows how.

The author is teacher Katie Coppens, whose experience integrating science and writing prompted her to write this classroom resource book. It features activities that combine writing with content in life science, Earth and space science, and engineering and physical science for grades 3–12.

Each of the 15 science activities comes with strategies for teaching a creative writing style—whether poetry or prose—for everything from plays to comics. Teachers can use the assignments as in-class activities, homework, or final assessments for a unit.

Also included are reproducible handouts, graphic organizers, writing models, scoring rubrics, and connections to the Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core State Standards. The classroom-friendly features work together to inspire students to be better writers and prompt teachers to use fresh strategies to assess science knowledge.
