Sell-out for Market Entry Seminar in Tokyo

Foreign firms also get tips on expanding in Japan market

TOKYO--()--The second seminar organized by Business Development Center Tokyo (BDCT) to help foreign enterprises enter and expand in Japan has attracted more than 50 attendees from embassies, chambers of commerce, and companies and start-ups.

BDCT was established to help firms and entrepreneurs from abroad establish a business in the capital. Consultants at the center use their international business experience and detailed local knowledge to deliver tailored consultations for market entry or expansion.

The experts provide hands-on support in English and Japanese, giving advice on navigating Tokyo’s vast size, overcoming Japanese language issues, and understanding the country’s distinctive business customs.

Hosted by Tokyo Metropolitan Government the seminar on Feb. 16 provided specialized support and opportunities for networking and consultations at the Invest Japan Business Support Center of co-hosting the Japan External Trade Organization.

High-ranking representatives of national and foreign governments, and entrepreneurs addressed guests.

Takahiro Matsushita, Deputy Director General for Project Coordination at Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG), said work is underway to revitalize the economy by leveraging its Special Economic Zones initiative, which includes inviting foreign companies to establish their headquarters and R&D centers in Tokyo.

Chris Heffer, Director of UK Trade & Investment at the British Embassy Tokyo, said three areas are required for a successful bilateral commercial relationship: a business-friendly environment; greater opportunity in the market, and support from public and private sectors.

Entrepreneurs who received support from BDCT and the Tokyo One-Stop Business Establishment Center (TOSBEC) gave presentations.

Case Study
Damian Griffiths, CEO of Doughnut Time, an Australian doughnut-making company trying to enter the Japan market, said: “Following some research, I found a consultant at BDCT who was able to assist us immediately. The consultant facilitated our initial visit, as well as matters pertaining to incorporating the company and finding a location for our store. I think what is offered at BDCT goes far and beyond the assistance you would receive in other countries.”

Tomonari Iwasaki and Kevin Edwards-Yano, both of Japanese firm ProWorks Consulting K.K., spoke about tax compliance, and incorporation and post-incorporation of a company.
