Lawrence Schreiber Named President of Empire BlueCross BlueShield

NEW YORK--()--Lawrence Schreiber, a 30-year veteran of the health insurance industry, has been named president of Empire BlueCross BlueShield. Schreiber succeeds Brian Griffin, who was appointed president of Anthem’s Commercial and Specialty Business Division in September. A wholly-owned subsidiary of Anthem, Inc., Empire is the state’s largest health insurer, covering four million+ New Yorkers.

In this role, Schreiber will be responsible for managing the Plan’s small and large group and individual business, including sales, provider relations and contracting, care management, underwriting, product delivery and regulatory and customer relationships. In addition, he will oversee Empire’s long-term strategic direction and work with elected officials and thought leaders to improve the health of New Yorkers.

Born and raised in Nyack, New York, Schreiber comes to Empire from his current position as president of the Anthem BlueCross and BlueShield Plan in Wisconsin. During his nearly seven-year tenure, the Plan saw significant membership and financial growth, and was recognized by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association as the fastest growing Blue Cross Blue Shield Plan in 2010. In addition, Schreiber successfully led enterprise-wide projects focused on growth, retention, health system collaboration and cost-of-care initiatives.

Schreiber brings a wealth of experience and market insight to Empire. He joined Anthem in 2006 and served in several leadership roles for an Anthem subsidiary. Prior to joining Anthem, Schreiber held a number of executive management positions at UnitedHealth Group and Aetna.

“Empire has provided quality, affordable health insurance to New Yorkers for over 80 years,” said Schreiber. “It’s an honor to be asked to lead this company, and I look forward to finding even better ways for Empire to focus on delivering a more personalized health care experience for our members and health care consumers.”

A graduate of the University of Tampa, Schreiber has been trained in executive leadership at the Wharton School of Business, attained Six Sigma Executive Champion certification and achieved the designation of Certified Employee Benefit Specialist through the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans. He is a highly active community leader in Wisconsin, currently chairing the American Cancer Society’s “CEOs Against Cancer” and serving as a board member of Competitive Wisconsin, the Alliance of Health Insurers, the Wisconsin Health Information Organization (WHIO) and Highway to Health headquartered in Radnor, Pa.

Schreiber will be based out of Empire’s Manhattan headquarters and officially begins on December 28th.
