The Nutrition Coalition Appoints Dr. Sarah Hallberg as Chair of Science Advisory Council

WASHINGTON--()--Today The Nutrition Coalition (TNC) announced the appointment of nutrition expert Sarah Hallberg, DO, Medical Director and Founder, Indiana University Health Arnett Medical Weight Loss Program, as Chair of the Coalition’s newly formalized Science Advisory Council.

Since announcement of its formation last month, The Nutrition Coalition has worked as a broad-based, informal consortium that includes some of the world’s leading nutrition and chronic disease experts. With the announcement of Dr. Hallberg’s new leadership role, TNC is formalizing its Science Advisory Council which will now focus on organizing for nutrition public policy advocacy in 2016.

“I would like to extend heartfelt thanks and gratitude to all of the TNC nutrition and health volunteers who helped launch this important new coalition for nutrition policy this Fall. TNC will be a proud voice for nutrition policy that works for current and future generations of American families,” stated Dr. Sarah Hallberg, newly appointed Chair of the Coalition’s Science Advisory Council. Dr. Hallberg is also an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine.

Hallberg joined the Coalition to help raise awareness about the importance of improving our nutrition policy by strengthening the process by which dietary guidelines are developed. The guidelines, which are updated every five years to reflect the latest science and research, are intended to help Americans develop healthy eating habits to preserve health and to prevent diet-related conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and obesity.

The Coalition was formed out of a growing concern that the Dietary Guidelines for Americans have not been able to stem the growing tide of obesity and diabetes in America. The Guidelines do not appear to reflect the most conclusive and current science available. The Coalition believes that a thorough and transparent process for developing new guidelines is needed to ensure that Americans are being recommended diets based on rigorous science. Towards this end, the Coalition will educate policymakers, stakeholders, and the public.

The Nutrition Coalition is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advocating for national nutrition policy based on rigorous science. The Nutrition Coalition is funded by the Action Now Initiative (ANI) – an advocacy group supported by Houston-based philanthropists Laura and John D. Arnold – which funds initiatives to ensure public policy is based on sound science. No financial support is provided by industry groups of any kind.
