Announces New 2015 Initiatives
The Board of Directors for SeniorNet (www.seniornet.org), the world's leading nonprofit technology educator of older adults, has announced new officers for the 2015-2017 term.
Paul DelPonte, a leading aging advocate was named Chairman. He has been a board member since 2010. DelPonte is currently Commissioner on Aging for Montgomery County, Maryland and an executive with Experience Works. He was instrumental in founding the Alliance for Aging Research as part of his long career as an advocate.
“Our new board and new structure signal a new energy for SeniorNet,” DelPonte said. “The digital age is part of global aging, helping to unite seniors across the globe and SeniorNet is helping to drive that change.”
Leslie M. Smith, retired IBM business development executive, was named President and CEO. Smith has served SeniorNet since 2000 as a board member and from 2005-2015 he served as Board Chairman. Smith’s leadership was the driving force behind the growth and expansion of SeniorNet for 15 years, increasing learning center resources, adopting social media efforts and partnering with national and international organizations to extend SeniorNet’s brand and business model around the world.
Slava Vero, a founder and director of the SeniorNet Huntington, New York flagship Learning Center, who has been a board member since 2010, was named Vice Chairman. Vero holds an M.S. in Medical Biology and enjoyed a 25-year career in her chosen field.
Barbara Page, an accounting and tax consultant from Huntington, NY, joined the board this year and was elected Secretary. Her connection to SeniorNet came through her 2011-2014 Chairmanship of the Board of the Family Service League of Long Island.
Paul Sladkus, a former broadcast executive for CBS/PBS, founder of Milestone Broadcast Corporation and a SeniorNet board member since 2006, was named Chairman of the 30th Anniversary Committee that will plan special events and celebrations to mark SeniorNet's milestone in May of 2016.
Also newly elected to the Board this year are Julie Kosteas Baker, Karalin Sprague, and Donghee Han. Baker is Account Director of Voxviva, Inc. and previously served as a consultant for the National Council on Aging’s Online Consumer Services. Sprague is manager of Lifelong Learning at Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders (SAGE) in New York City. Han is Director of the Research Institute of Science for Better Living of the Elderly (RISBLE) and cooperative professor at the Catholic University of Daegu, South Korea. Sprague and Han join Nicholas Brown, a board member since 2009, who is President and CEO of Affinity Network Solutions, to complete the Board’s composition.
New Initiatives
SeniorNet also announced a research partnership with the University of Maryland School of Nursing (UMSON). UMSON is using SeniorNet volunteers to help it study patient portal program technology that meets the criteria required by Medicare and Medicaid’s electronic health record incentive program. SeniorNet volunteers and students can complete an online survey about accessing their electronic health records, medication refill orders and private messages to their doctors.
In another high profile development, SeniorNet has been invited to speak at the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) annual meeting in Orlando, Florida, October 30-31. The presentation will include cybersecurity and new technology.
