Ingenious Car/Smartphone Connectivity Arrives on New 2016 Volkswagen Models for the US

MirrorLink®-Enabled VWs arrive in US showrooms beginning in August

BELMONT, Calif.--()--Volkswagen Group of America Electronic Research Laboratory -- The Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC), an organization driving global technologies for smartphone-centric car connectivity solutions, today announced that a number of U.S. market 2016 Volkswagen models will be MirrorLink® enabled. Now included in more of today’s popular vehicles and smartphones, MirrorLink is a smart way to bring select smartphone content to the dash. Large icons make apps easy to use and smart technology knows if the car is in Park or Drive.

While MirrorLink has reached US shores in models from other manufacturers, Volkswagen is the first to actively market the technology to consumers. The CCC made the announcement at a press event at Volkswagen Group of America’s Electronic Research Laboratory (ERL) that featured MirrorLink and other connected-car technologies.

“Volkswagen is committed to bringing competitive, innovative products to market that offer engaging technology and high levels of comfort and convenience for our customers,” said Joerg Sommer, vice president, Product Strategy and Marketing, Volkswagen of America, Inc. “By collaborating with technology leaders like MirrorLink, Volkswagen has been able to create one of the most comprehensive suites of connected vehicle services available on the automotive market today.”

“The dashboard is one of the automotive industry’s hottest innovation platforms right now,” said Alan Ewing, president and executive director of the CCC. “For a considerable amount of time, the US market has shown substantial demand for sweeping, interoperable connectivity options that are actually available to use in the here and now – and MirrorLink fits this bill. Volkswagen has already experienced tremendous success with European and Asian MirrorLink model rollouts, so we at the CCC are very excited to see what the US market has in store.”

MirrorLink is a leader in the industry for car-smartphone connectivity and is designed for maximum interoperability between a wide range of smartphones and cars. MirrorLink is also the only OS- and OEM-agnostic standard for car-smartphone connectivity and the only vendor-neutral standard where no single entity has a controlling stake. MirrorLink thus offers the quickest global route to more responsible and enjoyable connected driving.
