Books-A-Million Hosting Midnight Openings for Release of “Go Set a Watchman”

Select Books-A-Million stores will open at midnight on July 14, allowing customers to be the first to get a copy of Harper Lee’s sequel to “To Kill a Mockingbird”

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--()--On the morning of July 14, select Books-A-Million locations will open from midnight to 1 am, allowing customers to get the first copies of Harper Lee’s highly-anticipated second novel, “Go Set a Watchman.” Thousands of Books-A-Million customers have pre-ordered copies of the novel and can redeem their copies at these midnight openings. Those customers who didn’t pre-order will still be able to purchase a copy of “Go Set a Watchman” at the event. Customers that buy the novel or redeem their voucher at the midnight opening will get a free 16 ounce drink of choice at all Joe Muggs locations.

To find out which stores will hold a midnight opening event, visit Books-A-Million’s store locator online.

“This is the publishing event of the summer and our customers cannot wait to dive into what is sure to be another American classic from Harper Lee,” said Misty Fontenot, Senior Vice President of Operations for Books-A-Million. “We wanted to give our customers the first chance to get their copy, and these midnight openings will be a great way to celebrate the release with other fans of Lee’s American classic.”

“Go Set a Watchman” follows the story of Scout Finch, one of the featured characters in “To Kill a Mockingbird.” In the recently discovered novel, Scout has returned to visit her father in Lee’s Maycomb, Alabama, 20 years after the events that took place in “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Now an adult woman, Scout’s recollections of her childhood constituted the foundation for “To Kill a Mockingbird.”

“The wait is over! We'll be open at midnight so customers can pick up their copy of ‘Go Set a Watchman’ by Harper Lee and be one of the first to know what happened to Scout, Jem, and Atticus after ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ ended,” said Margaret Terwey, Senior Fiction Buyer for Books-A-Million. “It’s the book everyone will be talking about. Join the conversation!”

Lee is a native of Monroeville, Ala. where she currently resides. She lived in New York during the 1950s and many of the events in “To Kill a Mockingbird” are thought to be based loosely on her childhood observations while growing up in Alabama.
