Anesthesia Business Consultants Comments on the Continuance of the Affordable Care Act

JACKSON, Mich.--()--Anesthesia Business Consultants (ABC), a leading provider in billing and practice management for the anesthesia and pain management specialty, alerts readers that the United States Supreme Court has again upheld the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

President Obama in his comments to the public addressing the Supreme Court decision announced “that the ACA is here to stay”. Yesterday’s 6-3 ruling in King v. Burwell protected the immediate future of subsidized insurance for low- and middle-income Americans in all 50 states under the Affordable Care Act.

Some 6.4 million Americans were at risk of losing their “Obamacare” health insurance coverage had the Court invalidated the ACA and eliminated the subsidies that made insurance affordable through the individual health insurance exchanges or markets. The cost of insurance was predicted to rise dramatically for millions of others as the pool of participants shrank. Also at risk was the ability of patients with pre-existing conditions to obtain coverage.

The ability of hospitals and physicians including anesthesiologists to continue to provide medical care for very large numbers of people who would have had no coverage without the Obamacare subsidies is thus assured at least until after the 2016 elections. Further judicial scrutiny of the Affordable Care Act is unlikely to invalidate the law or its major provisions. Certain Members of Congress will continue seeking to repeal the ACA, and President Obama will continue to hold veto power over any legislation that would undermine his signature achievement. The next President and/or Congress will have much greater scope to change the law; the King v. Burwell decision was limited to the issue of the subsidies in states that did not have their own health insurance exchanges. Long-range predictions are impossible—but we hope that the greatest number of patients possible will continue to have access to high quality medical, surgical and anesthesia care.

And now, in the words of the Health Care Incentives Improvement Institute’s update dated 6/26/15, “So now, let’s get back to the real business at hand, which is to forge through the difficult transformation of the delivery system that will make healthcare affordable and improve its overall quality.”
