Quality Systems, Inc.'s Mirth Selected by HealthShare Exchange of Southeastern Pennsylvania

HSX Partners with Mirth for Point-of-Care Interoperability of Patient Health Record and Claims Data

IRVINE, Calif.--()--Mirth, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Quality Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: QSII) and a global leader in health information technology, announced today that HealthShare Exchange of Southeastern Pennsylvania, Inc. (HSX), a non-profit health information exchange (HIE) organization, will deploy various Mirth® Solutions to enable the secure electronic exchange of patient health records and claims data throughout Southeastern Pennsylvania.

Under the agreement, Mirth will support these core HIE functions for HSX:

  • simple, secure messaging (Mirth® Mail) using the Direct protocol and a provider directory to send and receive referrals, care alerts, test results, and other clinical communications;
  • a data interface/integration engine (Mirth® Connect) that builds connections with hospital health information systems to receive data feeds, including ADT (admission-discharge-transfer) alerts, continuity-of-care documents, lab reports, radiology reports, and transcribed documents;
  • a master patient index (Mirth® Match);
  • and a central data repository (CDR) (Mirth® Results).

Founded in 2009 and incorporated as a non-profit in 2012, HSX is a collaboration among major healthcare stakeholders, including health plans and the acute care hospitals in Southeastern Pennsylvania that facilitates the exchange of patient data between hospitals and insurers within the region.

By employing Mirth Solutions, HSX will enable its members – more than 50 hospitals, medical practices, clinics and insurers – to collaborate by sharing patient health records and claims data with the data accessible at the point of care, regardless of care setting and electronic health record (EHR) system.

According to Martin Lupinetti, executive director of HSX, the exchange has a goal to connect nearly 100 percent of approximately 15,000 providers, and virtually all hospitals, in the greater Philadelphia area, as well as community health centers, City of Philadelphia health clinics, and participating health plans.

“Our market and our state have significant opportunities to make greater use of health information exchange to produce meaningful benefits for the healthcare system,” says Lupinetti. “Employing Mirth solutions, we can build a more mature health information exchange and support our role as a health information service provider (HISP) — making information in electronic health records available for secure use across the system, from and to entities with different record systems. I am confident that with Mirth powering our engine, HSX will be equipped to enable medical centers, insurers, and practice offices to share information needed to make patient care more informed, more efficient, and more effective, regardless of the health information technology platforms used in each provider environment.”

Mirth has more than 40 such HIE clients including: Health Information Network of Arizona; Chesapeake Regional Information System for Our Patients (CRISP), in Maryland; Quality Health Network, in Western Colorado; and HealtheConnections, in New York.

“As the changing healthcare marketplace continues to dictate the need for increased information exchanges, HIEs are becoming a pivotal component to achieve current regulatory requirements and future industry initiatives. However, without the ability to integrate and report real-time health information from disparate systems at different care and payer organizations, HIEs cannot succeed,” said Jon Teichrow, senior vice president of research and development for Mirth. “With its scale, number of health system members, and inclusion of claims data in its service design, HSX is a unique and ambitious undertaking in the HIE realm. It stands to set precedents in overcoming interoperability challenges and serve as an example for building an HIE in a major, concentrated population area, with many competing providers and insurers. Mirth will supply a range of support to help this exchange succeed in making real-time health information broadly available across different care and payer organizations.”

HSX’s agreement with Mirth will help to extend the benefits of health information exchange to some four million lives in the greater Philadelphia area and eventually millions more in the surrounding region. Additionally, Mirth will host services for HSX at its Denver, Colorado, data center.
