Blank Rome Continues to Grow Its IP Practice with New Partner in New York

New Hire Comes as Firm Significantly Expands IP Group

NEW YORK--()--Blank Rome LLP is pleased to welcome Paul Zagar, M.D., to the Firm as a Partner in the Intellectual Property group in the Firm’s New York office. A former surgeon, Dr. Zagar concentrates his practice on patent prosecution, counseling, and litigation in the fields of biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, chemistry, and medical devices. He joins the Firm on the heels of Blank Rome’s combination in Houston with 24 attorneys from the intellectual property law firm of Wong, Cabello, Lutsch, Rutherford & Brucculeri L.L.P, and the recent addition of intellectual property lawyer Aldo Noto as Partner in the Firm’s Washington, D.C. office.

“Paul is an excellent addition to our IP group, which has been energized of late by a surge in growth and capabilities,” said Alan J. Hoffman, Blank Rome’s Chairman and Managing Partner. “Paul’s firsthand medical experience lends him exceptional insights into life science matters during an era of pay-for-delay cases, stricter FDA regulations, and intense competition between products on a global scale.”

Dr. Zagar comes to Blank Rome from McDermott Will & Emery LLP. His patent prosecution experience includes U.S. and foreign prosecution, reissues, reexaminations, infringement and validity options, and due diligence. The areas in which Dr. Zagar practices range from immunology and genetics to pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and diagnostic systems. His litigation work includes pharmaceutical cases arising under the Hatch-Waxman Act and infringement disputes.

“Blank Rome is rife with Ph.D.s and others with impressive experience in chemistry, pharmaceuticals, and other sciences,” Dr. Zagar said. “I look forward to having the opportunity to both contribute to and draw upon the collective knowledge in these technical areas, and am confident that working in the Firm’s collaborative environment will allow me to deepen and expand the work I do for clients.”

Before embarking on the practice of law, Dr. Zagar practiced general and vascular surgery for nearly five years—in Florida at the West Palm Beach Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and in Virginia at the Riverside Tappahannock Hospital.

Dr. Zagar has devoted his pro bono efforts to helping veterans obtain and increase their medical benefits in the Veteran Affairs system.

Dr. Zagar earned his J.D. from the College of William and Mary School of Law, his M.D. from SUNY Downstate Medical Center, and his B.A. from the University of Virginia. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
