Ebates Father’s Day Survey Reveals Dad’s Top Gift Choice—Clothing!

Survey Also Reveals That People Prefer Darth Vader to Don Draper in Favorite Fictional Father Lineup

SAN FRANCISCO--()--American dads have weighed in on what they most want for Father’s Day and the confounding answer this year—beating out BBQ equipment, beer and new tools—is clothing. According to new research released today by Ebates, the pioneer and leader in online cash back shopping, appreciative children and spouses should be browsing for dad-staples like Bermuda shorts and, ye olde Father’s day classic, the necktie. As far as what else dad might like for the holiday, the survey revealed that families seem to be on roughly the right track, except for underestimating how much dad would like a cold brew:

What NOT to Give Dad

Looks like dad is psyched about his “dad bod” this year, because he does not want any assistance getting fitter. 37 percent of dads agreed that a gym membership was the thing they would least like to receive for Father’s Day and, with 27 percent of the vote, Fitbits were also an unpopular idea.

“Finding the right gift for dad can be a challenge since preferences seem to vary widely from year to year,” said Kevin H. Johnson, CEO of Ebates. “Last year, high-tech items like laptops and tablets topped dads’ gift lists, but this year it seems like most dads want to update their wardrobes. Shoppers can count on Ebates to let them know exactly what to buy dad, and where to get the best coupons, discounts and cash back on those gifts.”

Disney Characters take Top Spots on Favorite Fictional Fathers List

Meanwhile, this year’s favorite fictional dad is Mufasa of The Lion King, who garnered 24 percent of votes for the position, followed by Marlin of Finding Nemo with 14 percent of the vote. Phil Dunphy from Modern Family received 13 percent of the vote and, while with 3 percent of the vote, Darth Vader did not rank highly as a favorite fictional father, he did manage to beat out Mad Men’s Don Draper, an abysmal failure of a fictional father, who barely received 1 percent of the votes.

Dad Wants Family Time This Year

When asked how they most want to spend their Father’s Day, almost three quarters revealed that they’d like to spend it with their family (72 percent). Spending time outside with their loved ones (47 percent), grilling and sharing a beer with family (44 percent) and eating a home cooked meal (37 percent) were popular choices. Some dads admitted that they didn’t want to do the dishes or any housework on their day (23 percent).

Savvy Dads Don’t Want You to Splurge!

Dads showed an uncanny ability to predict how much their loved ones would be spending on them this year, across spending categories. When it comes to how much dads think their families will spend on a gift this year, 28 percent say that $20-$50 is enough. Luckily, their families agree, with 35 percent admitting that they plan to spend that amount on a gift.

5 percent of dads believe their families will be spending upwards of $250 on their Father’s Day gift this year, while 10 percent of dads correctly guessed that their families will be spending zero dollars on them.
