The 14th Endocrine Regulations Prize of the Fondation Ipsen was Awarded to C. Ronald Kahn

(Joslin Diabetes Center & Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA)

PARIS--()--This year, the Fondation IPSEN Endocrine Regulations Prize was presented at the European Congress of Endocrinology, in Dublin, on May 19th, 2015. The international jury chaired by Professor Iain Robinson (National Institute for Medical Research, London, UK), awarded the prize to Professor C. Ronald Kahn for his pioneering work on diabetes. C. Ronald Kahn directs research at the Joslin Diabetes Center, and teaches at Harvard Medical School. He is a member of the US National Academy of Sciences. His work has made it possible to elucidate the mechanisms of the insulin signal transduction pathway and its alterations in type 2 diabetes. Kahn and his collaborators have shown that the insulin receptor is a kinase, i.e. an enzyme that can phosphorylate a protein. Thus the hormone adds a phosphate to a tyrosine and thereby triggers the cascade of biochemical events that characterises the action of insulin.
C. Ronald Kahn declared: “The Fondation Ipsen Endocrine Regulations Prize is a true honor. I am delighted to be counted among the previous recipients for this prestigious award.”
