Edifecs Smart Trading Demonstration Highlights Delivery of Forms Information within Healthcare

Edifecs solutions capable of standardization and unification of form management processes for clinical, administrative and financial healthcare domains

BELLEVUE, Wash.--()--Today, Edifecs, a global health information technology solutions company, announced the results of its demonstration at SDC (Structured Data Capture) FHIR Connectathon, hosted by HL7 FHIR. At the event, Edifecs showed how Web Forms user interface (UI) (one developed specifically for this demonstration) can connect to the Edifecs Smart Trading Platform to deliver forms information to electronic medical records (EMR) systems as well as between payers and providers.

SDC FHIR Connectathon put into practice a Structured Data Capture Implementation Guide, geared toward standardization and unification of a form management process for clinical administrative and financial domains of healthcare.

“I enjoyed seeing Edifecs’ demonstration at the end of the Connectathon. With very little prep time, they were able to demonstrate end-to-end implementation of the Structured Data Capture scenarios and showed their applicability in spanning the clinical and claims spaces,” said Lloyd McKenzie, SDC FHIR Technical Lead.

During the first demonstration at SDC FHIR Connectathon, Edifecs showed how the use of its Smart Trading solution facilitates data population into EMR systems from a pre-appointment questionnaire, and the second showed how an eligibility request form is sent from the provider to the payer. Edifecs XEngine Server (XES) initiated the business workflow routes to take the data from the web form, bring it to the FHIR server and back from the server to the EMR system.

Being a new and rapidly-developing standard, HL7 FHIR continuously offers more capabilities for the healthcare community. SDC is a new domain that FHIR standards has been exploring, which targets several use cases including:

  • Automation of patient forms (pre-appointment forms, medical history forms, pre-existing conditions, allergies, etc.) delivered to providers.
  • Forms filled by clinicians with the purpose of extending the medical history of a patient.
  • Questionnaires (in regards to clinical trials and research) captured within the electronic health record system during clinical encounters.
  • Request forms (pre-authorization forms, responses for additional information, and even eligibility) that may be reused by providers with the purpose of communicating the information to a payer.

“Standards play a critical role in value creation and collaboration in the healthcare process community and the industry must go beyond data interoperability as the first step to achieving process interoperability,” said Sunny Singh, President and CEO of Edifecs. “Industry interoperability standards offer potential for billions in cost savings which is why Edifecs is focused on driving healthcare data exchange across all partner networks.”
