International Students Sing at NCKU Singing Contest

TAINAN, Taiwan--()--Nearly 120 international students from more than 50 countries, including Japan, Korea, Germany, England, France, America and Australia are currently taking part in a Chinese songs singing contest held by the Chinese Language Center (CLC) of National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan.

During 5 successive lunch break from May 18 to 21, the competitors are ready to sing to their heart content enjoying the fun of learning Chinese and the culture behind the language.

The singing contest is a great opportunity for the foreign students to spice up the learning of Chinese and motivates them to use the language more, according to the organizer from the center.

After singing, Eva Laurenson from New Zealand said, “I was a little bit nervous but I think it’s for the fun and for the experience so it was really great.”

“When we are challenged, we really learn a lot,” according to Eva. “The singing contest really pushes us to learn some new words which is very valuable when I want to do presentation in the future.”

Eva has been studying at CLC for eight months already and she claimed her learning here is great. “Everyone is so friendly in Tainan and I really like Tainan as a city.”

Benjamin Pastel, a 26-year-old computer sciences student from the United States, follows his girlfriend to Tainan and has started learning Chinese in CLC three months ago.

“I was embarrassed to sing because I’m not a good singer,” said Benjamin with a big smile adding, “There were a lot more people than I expected. The room was completely packed. Everyone was very exciting and it was fun.”

Kris K D Arceo from America was a graduate student in NCKU’s Institute of International Management (IIMBA). He has learned Chinese on and off for more than two years and performed well in the singing contest.

Kris said, “It was a very good experience. You learn the song, how to do the introduction in Chinese and you get to see other people perform.”

The winners will receive awards on May 21, the last day of the competition.
