Developers Can Create Home Automation Apps for the Microsoft Band Using Insteon API

SAN FRANCISCO--()--Insteon®, creator of the world’s premier home automation technology, announced that developers can now leverage Insteon’s RESTful API to create home automation apps that use the Microsoft Band. Microsoft Band is the first fitness wearable powered by Microsoft Health, enabling you to achieve your wellness goals by tracking your heart rate, steps, calorie burn, sleep quality and more. A demonstration was presented last week during a larger breakout session at the Build conference.

As part of the demonstration at Build, Microsoft’s annual developer conference, Insteon illustrated ways developers can create home automation applications that use Microsoft Band, the first wearable device powered by Microsoft Health. The demo showed how a Microsoft Band was used to control a light switch by connecting through a phone running Windows.

“Earlier at Build, we released the full Microsoft Band SDK for the first time, allowing developers to build apps on Microsoft Band,” said Zulfi Alam, General Manager, Personal Devices at Microsoft. “Interoperability with Insteon is a powerful, real-world example of what can be achieved when you combine a sensor-rich technology like the Microsoft Band with cloud-centric, intelligent software like Windows.”

“We’re taking home automation to inspiring new places and we’re delighted to extend our control to the Microsoft Band,” said Joe Dada, CEO of Insteon. “Together with our developer community, we’re bringing new power and flexibility to home automation, making it easier than ever for consumers to enjoy life at home—wherever you happen to be.”

Developers interested in building on the Insteon RESTful API can sign up for developer access online and buy an Insteon Hub, available for $39.99 at Smarthome.com. The API then enables developers to build apps capable of sending a command to any Insteon Hub in the world, all under full OAuth 2.0 compliance.
