Arcadia Healthcare Solutions Reveals the Power of EHR Data with Benchmark Capabilities

With a database of 8M patients, Arcadia provides insights and comparative baseline data for healthcare organizations

A Day in the Life of Dr. Jones: Embedded deep within the EHR data that Arcadia mines for its customers is a highly detailed set of interactions between the Provider, Support Staff, Patients, and the EHR software itself. Compiling each “click” within the system into a Gantt chart provides an intuitive summary of a day’s activities. Critical operational data like patient wait times, provider efficiency, documentation distribution and more emerge from thousands of minute interactions. (Graphic: Business Wire)

BURLINGTON, Mass.--()--Arcadia Healthcare Solutions, a leading Electronic Health Record (EHR) data aggregation and analytics technology services provider for health systems and health plans, is utilizing their internal database of nearly 8 million benchmark patients out of a database that contains 19.5 million total patients and 10 thousand providers from ambulatory data sources. This benchmark data provides insights into the national patient population for population health management and comparative patient, provider, and system analysis. Leveraging its database, which contains HIPAA-compliant de-identified patient and client data from a broad cross-section of the country, Arcadia has gained insights into several aspects of healthcare organizations to showcase the power and importance of EHRs.

With the introduction of its benchmark capabilities, Arcadia will not only leverage these insights for research, but also fuel its new analytics solution, providing a comparative baseline for all customers. The Arcadia Analytics platform is a web-based reporting portal that provides caregivers and administrators across an entire healthcare organization relevant and timely access to clinical, cost and utilization data. It deeply integrates clinical data from more than 30 different EHR platforms (and hundreds of instances) and claims data for health systems and health plans, to drive insight into an organization’s patient population and performance for Accountable Care Organizations (ACO) and other shared-risk contracts.

“EHR data is critically important to driving healthcare reform and the macro goals that the U.S. is trying to accomplish, but it is significantly underutilized in actual patient care and population health,” said Sean Carroll, CEO of Arcadia Healthcare Solutions. “A majority of the players in the healthcare industry don’t believe that EHR data is being used well and while many vendors recognize its importance, they don’t use it to its fullest potential. However, we have been using EHR data for almost a decade and this benchmark data is further validation to the potential power it can hold.”

Arcadia recently surveyed the following topics, uncovering insights into a variety of critical healthcare topics to further showcase the power of EHR data, including:

  • The evolution of diabetes: From a sample of 2,197,768 total patients spanning twelve years, 180,481 were, at some point, diagnosed with diabetes. However, 24,626 undiagnosed patients were predicted as “at risk” for diabetes based on routine lab tests. Of those individuals, 12,905 – over 50% – were diagnosed with diabetes the following year. Arcadia’s use of clinical research, as well as clinical best practices, informs algorithms, like this diabetes prediction algorithm, to help identify at-risk patients, enabling providers to be more proactive with their care and reduce frequency and severity of chronic diseases.
  • An average day in the life of “Dr. Jones”: On an average day, a physician had 24 scheduled appointments; each one on average took 84 minutes from check-in to check-out. The provider “clicked” 2,541 times in the EHR, and the support staff added another 3,182 “clicks” before the day was through. Using Arcadia’s deep EHR data mining and advanced visualization tools, providers can compare how their practice stacks up against others in the area, where a provider’s schedule derails, and the hours of coding that occur after the official work day is over.
  • A comparison of claims and EHR data: A 500-patient sample of total integrated health records showed that, while claims data is easy to come by, it’s delayed and short on details. EHR data, on the other hand, is available in real-time, rich in clinical content, and right under a provider’s fingerprints, informing outcomes-based measures. This visualization highlights the importance of analyzing both EHR and claims datasets in order to paint the full picture of a population of patients’ healthcare histories.
  • A year of utilization: This unique visualization presents every encounter made by 27,340 patients, sorted by date of first visit, and organized by point-of-service and cost. The representation is not only visually striking, but is also informative, showing that 28 percent of the year’s patients, representing 50 percent of the organization’s medical costs for the year, have already been through the provider’s doors by the end of January.

Arcadia will be displaying infographic versions of this new benchmark functionality with use cases at their HIMSS15 booth #7834 and will be rolling out new insights monthly on its Arc Trends blog: http://www.arcadiasolutions.com/blog/.
