Kabam to Launch Marvel Contest of Champions in China

Action-Fighting Hit Game Tops 30 Million Downloads in Western Market

HONG KONG & SAN FRANCISCO--()--The expansive Marvel Universe is coming to Chinese mobile gamers as Kabam today said it plans to launch its hit game Marvel Contest of Champions in China later this year. Kabam CEO Kevin Chou announced plans to launch the game, which already has been downloaded more than 30 million times, at the Mobile Games Forum in Hong Kong today. Mr. Chou declined to say which Chinese publishing partner will distribute the game, but Kabam is actively negotiating with potential publishers, and Chou said Kabam will name the company soon.

Kabam launched Marvel Contest of Champions in North America and Europe in December 2014 available for iPhone®, iPad®, iPod touch® and Android™ devices. The game was immediately named Editors’ Choice on the Apple App Store℠ in more than 100 countries and was downloaded more than 20 million times in its first six weeks. By early April, the game had exceeded 30 million downloads.

Marvel Contest of Champions stays true to classic Marvel storytelling with big threats, heroic moments, and shocking revelations wrapped into a game that is not only easy to pick-up and play, but is also fun,” Cuz Parry, Kabam’s creative director for Marvel Contest of Champions, said when Kabam launched the game. “The development team is a huge fan of Marvel, and we’re proud to deliver an epic game that we know fans will love to play.”

Marvel Contest of Champions players build and manage a team of Super Heroes and Super Villains from across the Marvel Universe, with their team gaining bonuses based on character affiliations taken straight from Marvel comics. The game, which was developed by Kabam’s Vancouver Studio and written by Marvel comics writer Sam Humphries (The Legendary Star-Lord), is a high-action, high-fidelity Super Hero combat game for mobile devices. In the game, players assume the role of Earth’s representative in a cosmic battle of epic proportions, organized by The Collector against Super Villains such as Kang the Conqueror and Thanos, in the ultimate brawl for untold power.

This will be Kabam’s first game launch in China although the company has had a development studio in Beijing since 2011, which has turned out such hits as The Hobbit: Kingdoms of Middle-earth in partnership with Warner Bros. and Kingdoms of Camelot: Battle for the North. Each of those games earned more than $100 million in less than four years.
