Addiction Campuses: Religious Freedom Doesn’t Discriminate

Why Christian Rehabs Shouldn’t Turn Anyone Away

BRENTWOOD, Tenn.--()--Televisions and newspapers have been buzzing all week with news of Indiana’s religious freedom bill that protects businesses in denying service to customers due to religious freedom. A similar bill in Tennessee was brought up and shelved just Tuesday that would protect mental health counselors in refusing treatment to groups of people because of “religious beliefs.”

Addiction Campuses finds this to be extremely unfortunate. We would no more turn away someone who is gay than we would a divorced woman, or someone who wasn’t a virgin when they married, or anyone for that matter who had a burning desire to lay down an addiction that controls their life.

During the month of April, we will explore the success of faith-based rehab - why it works so well, why it’s necessary and why some addicts require a different model of rehabilitation. Addiction Campuses operates an array of different recovery models, from faith-based to dialectical behavioral therapy and even adventure therapy.

One of our most successful programs is faith-based. It is neither a requirement that attendees of the program be Christians, nor is it a requirement they be one when they leave. We lay out Biblical principles of recovery, we pray with our clients, and we offer them pastoral counseling 24 hours a day.

If someone is able to connect with God through their experience at Addiction Campuses, we’re elated. If they don’t, but they’re able to lay their addiction down, we rejoice as well. That is what we feel is leading by example, and showing the love of Christ.

Often times we get asked the question “If it’s faith-based, why does it cost money?” The answer is simple: We have 160 full time employees that hold necessary positions at our company. We operate several major facilities across the U.S. that must keep their lights on and offer comfortable residency. Our fees are poured back into stellar clinical programs, doctors, therapists, accommodations and scholarships for people in need of treatment.

As part of this month’s theme, we have released a free, downloadable infographic explaining pastoral-centered therapy, and the difference between a free program and one that requires tuition. These are things every family battling the disease of addiction must weigh when choosing the right method of care for their loved one.
