NMS Labs and StopDUID.org Sponsor Update of 50 States DUI Law Compilation

WILLOW GROVE, Pa.--()--Working in conjunction with StopDUID.org, NMS Labs has released an updated compilation of the laws in all 50 states dealing with alcohol impaired driving and driving under the influence of drugs (DUID). Dr. Barry Logan, Vice President of Forensic Science Initiatives at NMS Labs, introduced the report saying, “There is a huge increase in awareness among lawmakers and the driving public about the influence of drugs on driving and the consequences of mixing drugs with alcohol. This document puts existing state laws at the fingertips of policy makers and allows them to compare how well their state is positioned on this important issue relative to their neighbors.”

The report’s format, originally compiled for NHTSA by the Walsh group in 2002, and again in 2009, has been a key reference document and an invaluable resource for allowing state legislatures, traffic safety professionals and federal policy makers track nationwide progress of impaired driving laws.

The report also includes a summary table that allows a quick comparison of key features of effective legislation including circumstances in which drug testing is required, sanctions for first and subsequent DUI offenses, whether the state has a DUID per se law, and if oral fluid drug testing is permissible for DUID testing purposes.

“With increased research activity in the area of driving under the influence of drugs, there is better appreciation of the fact that alcohol is not the only risk factor for impairment. Some drivers combine alcohol with their drug use and this issue is not addressed by the laws in many states,” Dr. Logan Explains. “The advent of more widespread medical marijuana laws and decriminalization and legalization of recreational marijuana in some states has further raised the profile of the drugged driving issue. This makes it crucial to be able to track different approaches taken by states with respect to their marijuana and driving laws, and work towards best practices.”

The project was carried out as collaboration between NMS Labs and StopDUID.org. StopDUID.org is a website with real time updated links to changes in legislation regarding alcohol, drugs and driving as new laws and policies are put in place by state legislatures. The website also tracks pending legislation state by state on DUI and DUID related issues.
