Miami Beach’s Ingenious Takeover of the Art World

The Art Basel City Brings Art, Class and Sophistication to the Beach Destination

MIAMI BEACH, Fla.--()--Miami Beach has evolved into the favorite winter destination of the international art world, hosting Art Basel Miami Beach, the event that brings over 250 of the world’s leading galleries and 70,000 art visitors to the city each year. This year, from December 4-7 the Miami Beach Convention Center will transform 500,000-square-feet into exhibition space, setting the stage for the dynamic cultural fusion that is Art Basel. Once known solely for its art deco architecture, warm beaches and infinite nightlife, Miami Beach has become a thriving arts capital since its Art Basel debut in 2002.

Sited at the perfect union of North and Latin America, Art Basel recruited Miami Beach as the ideal second location following Hong Kong and immediately established itself as the premier show in the Americas. Although Art Basel Miami Beach technically denotes a 4-day fair, it has thrived into a much larger spectacle, taking over Miami Beach each winter with galleries, curators, collectors, art enthusiasts, pop culture royalty, satellite fairs, parties and events scattered across the city. At any turn of the head, you can find breathtaking work on display ranging from paintings, sculpture, installations and everything in between.

“Art Basel Miami Beach has enhanced the city’s cultural richness to a new degree. Every year, the event cultivates more art, culture and talent that presents itself to our city for a week, but impacts us for years to come,” says Steve Adkins, Chair of the Miami Beach Visitor and Convention Authority.

“This event is one of the most important times of the year for Miami Beach and the art realm,” says Grisette Marcos, Executive Director of Miami Beach Visitor and Convention Authority. “Miami Beach has become a mecca for art enthusiasts worldwide. The influx of art zealots and visitors is staggering.”

This year, Art Basel Miami Beach is expecting 67 galleries from 31 countries on exhibit as well as hundreds of events around the city including the celebration of The Bass Museum of Art’s 50th anniversary, the SELECT art fair featuring Solange Knowles, the highly anticipated SCOPE Miami Beach and the citing of 800 iconic structures of Miami Beach’s Art Deco District.
