LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Los Angeles residents, especially those from the San Fernando Valley, flocked to the new Discovery Cube Los Angeles (DCLA) during its opening weekend to make the 71,000-square-foot interactive museum at the Hansen Dam Recreation Area in the Lake View Terrace neighborhood an instant success.
Representatives from the nonprofit Discovery Science Foundation (DSF) reported that attendance at the 2.5-acre campus exceeded projections. “The response by residents in the Valley and beyond was extraordinary and suggests that our formula for hands-on science learning will be just as popular in L.A. as it has been in Orange County for 15 years,” said Kafi Blumenfield, DCLA executive director.
“From Day One, when 300 students participated in our opening ceremony, we’ve had strong interest in field trips from local schools. We’re also encouraged in the number of weekend visitors that purchased family annual memberships giving them unlimited visits to both Discovery Cubes for one year.”
The long-anticipated sister campus to the popular Discovery Cube Orange County (DCOC) in Santa Ana, DCLA opened Nov. 13 as one of the most technically advanced destinations for science-based learning and hands-on discovery in the world. Two levels of hands-on exhibits, displays, programs and learning spaces celebrate the Foundation’s four core initiatives of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) proficiency, early childhood learning, healthy living and environmental stewardship.
Highlights include exhibits spotlighting the work of the Los Angeles Bureau of Sanitation (LA San) and Los Angeles Department of Water & Power (DWP) as part of both groups’ strategic partnerships with DCLA. These include the technically advanced Inspector Training Course; a simulated Helicopter Tour; Discovery Market; Planetary Research Station; the Aquavator; and the Race to Zero Waste, a thrilling, game-based adventure that challenges participants to sort trash and divert materials from landfills before it’s too late.
DCLA is open every day of the year except Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Operating hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. everyday. Hours may be extended during seasonal periods.
Admission to DCLA is $16.95 for adults and $12.95 for seniors 60 and older and kids ages 3 to 12. Kids under 3 are free. Special rates apply for groups of 15 or more. For a limited time, a special promotion allows admittance to anyone for just $10.00.
