NEW YORK--()--The YMCA of Greater New York announced today that President and Chief Executive Officer Jack Lund will retire effective June 30, 2015, after ten years leading the largest YMCA in the U.S. and forty years devoted to the organization.

“Jack Lund has been a tireless advocate for the children and families of New York City who benefit every day from the YMCA, and thanks to his vision the organization has never been stronger than it is today,” said Sal Maglietta, Chair of the Board of Directors of the YMCA of Greater New York. “Over the past ten years and through the economic downturn, Jack has led our YMCA through a period of remarkable growth and community impact, with unprecedented enrollment and robust and relevant programs. On behalf of the Board and the entire YMCA community, I want to thank Jack for all he has done, and will continue to do, for the Y.”

Under his leadership, Lund has grown the reach of the YMCA of Greater New York to more than 500,000 New Yorkers, half of them under the age of 25, for the first time in its 161 year history. He raised overall YMCA assets and revenue to record heights and secured an A- bond rating for the organization from S&P.

During Lund’s tenure, new YMCA’s opened in Chinatown, Downtown Brooklyn, Park Slope, and most recently in the underserved communities of Coney Island and the Rockaways. Major projects were completed in all of the Y’s remaining branches notably total rebuilds of the Bedford-Stuyvesant and Ridgewood, Queens Ys as well as a major aquatics center in Prospect Park. Currently, the YMCA is planning new facilities for the Bronx and Flushing, Queens. As leader of New York City’s YMCA, Lund recruited and engaged the City’s top corporate, community and civic leaders to serve on the Association and branch boards of directors. The Y’s fundraising efforts generated more than $150 million in private philanthropy.

Through four carefully designed strategic plans, the Y developed innovative programs and services to address critical social needs in New York City including children’s health, civic engagement, academic achievement, opportunity youth and immigrant services.

“The YMCA of Greater New York is a bedrock nonprofit institution in the City of New York. Above and beyond the bricks and mortar that make up our buildings, it’s the staff, members and volunteers that truly are the lifeblood of our organization,” said Mr. Lund. “Over the last decade, we’ve made significant progress in achieving our priorities. It is without hesitation that I can say that this has been one of the most rewarding and fulfilling periods of my career. I am confident that the fresh ideas that come with new leadership will continue to propel the YMCA here in New York City to new heights.”

During his tenure, Lund played a key role in cultivating talent, launching a comprehensive professional development program for the Y’s 4,500 New York employees. His reach extended beyond the city as well, as he served as chair of the YMCA World Urban Network, a group of YMCA CEOs from the world’s largest cities.

Prior to the YMCA of Greater New York, Lund served as the President and CEO of the YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee from 1995 through 2004. Prior to that position, he held leadership roles at the Chicago Metropolitan YMCA, the Central Chester County YMCA, Greater New Haven YMCA, various branches of the San Francisco YMCA, and the Bethlehem YMCA. Since 2002, Lund also has served as an adjunct professor at Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Lund currently serves on the Board of Directors of New York’s Tanenbaum Center for Interreligious Understanding and the National Winter Sports Education Foundation. He is also a trustee of Springfield College.

“In the coming weeks the Board will commission a search committee led by Nancy Calderon of KPMG to focus on the important task of identifying the YMCA of Greater New York’s next President and CEO,” Maglietta continued. “Jack’s continued leadership during this time and our rigorous search will ensure that the organization never wavers from our work to strengthen the foundations of our communities here in New York City.”
